Wow thanks, missed that. That is very strange behavior.
On desktop you are required to add two numerical digits to the end of the username. Is this behaviour the same across all new versions of signal supporting usernames?
Yes (although I believe you can also add more than 2 if you want)
Does that mean I should claim the username I desire asap as it is squattable?
If you plan on not ever changing it, yes.
Your profile name is the only thing someone will see after a chat has been initiated using either your user name or phone number. Vanity user names or handles arenât as much of a thing.
Consider you get a large influx of spam message requests because an unsavory crypto scam project has identified your username as a juicy target. Change your username and that all goes away.
Changing it regularly is a useful feature, not something to be avoided imo.
Finally I can ditch matrix
The maximum length is 9 digits as per my testing.
However, starting with 0 seems highly restrictive and âUsername is takenâ will always return for any numbers longer than 2 digits and starting with 0, e.g. 010, 09875535, etc, these wonât work.
Not sure if it is a bug.
For signal it is{username}.{2-9digit}, so if you have a specific combination that you really like, then Yes
Can we really? Its the most bridgable app, considering its just IRC done right. Nothing else comes close to interoperability unless you count XMPP and theyre less popular for some reason these daysâŚ
Just in case if anyone mis-interpreted the username feature
The username feature did no add anything new in terms of privacy from signal.
But its only brought you privacy from âother signal usersâ and not signal itself.
Sure now signal app could have more use cases, like participating in group chats you were earlier unsure about , but it does not add anything which would make you ditch matrix or xmpp.
I only use it with like one telegram chat.
Rest is only with peeps that donât want to share phone numbers. I see no reason now to stay on this broken chat system. Perhaps your usage differers.
not sure how one survives those groups haha
but no-one want to use these.
from my testing this is only true if you didnât have a previous saved conversation. So the phone number does not go away if you have been talking already
Not a bug since it looks like only 1 digit numbers (1-9) can start with zero, because otherwise 010 = 10.
So basically discriminators are real numbers and not just unique strings.
Probably, but if it is the case then I donât quite understand why they wouldnât just ask user to provide a number , and fill all those missing digits with 0 in the background, asking a min, 2-digit ânumberâ and allowing 0 for 1-9 seems quite confuaing to me
A single company owns and operates the platform. They set the rules, moderate content, and have complete control over user data and experience. Lacks user control and transparency and is vulnerable to censorship.
Take recent examples, Twitter and Skiff. They monetize and can be sold. Even if they are not sold and they are a company that you trust your data, governments can request access to your data (political regimes change all the time).
A 501(c)(3) nonprofit has no legal mechanism for âownershipâ and canât be bought or sold.
