Would storage would be an issue for dashcam purposes?
I got the idea from your OP.
"impromptu dashcam, a ridiculous external SSD, and/or possibly an offline maps device using solely GPS and downloaded maps. "
I just threw out an idea to hopefully incite others. I don’t have a current need for extra storage. Thinking about it more now makes me realize that any dashcam should be a device I have no problem relinquishing to the police.
I have no idea what a 2XL has but my 6a has 128gb. Of course, finding a dashcam app is the question. Perhaps the app can record in 10 minute blocks and delete old segments when the storage fills just like a proper dashcam.
Edit: I found a dashcam app on F-Droid called “Alibi”. Loads of settings but doesn’t appear to autosave after a crash.
If I could get it to record off both cameras, record audio, and (long-shot) display the feed off an additional camera mounted to the back, it would be an improvement to an actual dashcam I own. Definitely worth me looking into.
I’ve never used it before but Magic Earth has a dashcam feature.
Noted. Yeah checked the website, As long as you can download maps and use the dashcam and gps offline I’m golden with it.
Dashcam seems a terrible idea as it would heat/overheat the phone on high brightness
I use old phones as media playback devices
You might very well be right, but what do you mean “on high brightness?” The screen or the camera sensor being overexposed?
I imagine that others would have come up with before if it worked. I wonder if it would be best to remove the battery and wire it to the car via ACC power. (ACC = accessory, only powered when the car is running.)
If you can yeah but nowadays it’s not really easily removable.
I’m not sure if Phones can do passthrough charging without a battery or if that’s what they resort to.
Is it that on the Pixel 2 XL?
It’s currently January on the Nintendo Switch (yes I know) and OnePlus 8T. I don’t think Lineage OS publishes every changelog
Cranking your OLED screen up to maximum brightness to mitigate the brightness of the sun plus the sun shining on your phone heats it up very quickly, reducing the battery life quickly.
Ah, that makes a lot of sense. Thank you
If you don’t want waste, take it to a e-waste center if you have one nearby.
I plan on using mine as a webcam once the security support runs out. Better than any webcam out there.
I haven’t heard great things about e-waste recycling, or most recycling for that matter. I hope that there are some that actually make a good impact, but I am dubious. Worth looking into for sure, I would just want to vet each option.
A webcam is quite an interesting idea. I’m not sure what you had in mind but I imagine two routes if I was to copy your idea.
The simpler and physically easier route would be just leaving the phone whole and finding a way to route the feed through the USB-C port on the phone. A quick search tells me that there are apps that could help accomplish this, I just would have to make sure they are compatible and secure.
The other option requiring more technical knowledge of how the cameras on the 2 XL are wired. I could remove one, or both, and possibly figure out how to wire them to go to my computer.
This is speculation, but I wonder if an old phone (/laptop) camera could be turned into a PoE home security camera.
Definitely don’t throw it away, just install LineageOS on it. So long as you’re careful with what apps you install, websites you visit, and networks you connect to, it could easily serve a second-phone purpose. Just don’t put anything too sensitive or important on there.
In the past, a lot of people were actually able to use old Androids to protect their privacy through Haven but I think that project might be unmaintained now. Maybe there’s an up-to-date alternative? Another thought I had is using it as a Briar node.
You could put it on a guest network and turn it into a BOINC machine for science. I do this with old laptops that aren’t really usable as laptops anymore.
