Separate VPN Servers and VPN Clients

I am going to mark this thread as rejected. I am not against a generic VPN client section being added to our recommendations, where we could recommend—for example—the generic WireGuard client perhaps.

However, I don’t think we should evaluate VPN clients that are developed and distributed by VPN server providers separately from the providers themselves, which I think is what this thread is suggesting. If we are concerned about Proton’s client we should resolve the original conversation in Remove ProtonVPN - #160 by jonah instead of this.

I do see a reason for some change in the criteria but I don’t see it necessarily being it done this way. This is fragmentation and a non unified view on what PG thinks of VPNs and will only lead to confusion among the average person who is simply looking for a well researched answer for the VPN to use (and not evaluate the product themselves to learn of the differences and why which this will lead to).

You would lose many of the security and privacy benefits offered by first-party clients like post-quantum tunnels, DAITA, etc.

There are a lot of reasons you’d want to use the first-party clients, and I don’t want to have to recommend VPN clients in a hypothetical VPN client section that only work with certain providers, which is the situation this suggestion would create.
