Proton will no longer post on Mastodon

I also kinda wanna mention that I’m slightly annoyed that the Fediverse is referred to as Mastodon. I really hate Mastodon the software

I was going to point that out too, but I think that a lot of the problems with the Fediverse are Mastodon-specific so it works out lol

I fail to see how this is a problem inherent to decentralization. If anything, decentralization mitigates this since anyone can choose an instance they like or self host.

This is a wild statement considering the amount of propaganda and censorship on X/twitter since Musk took over.

It’s ridiculous they recommend Reddit instead. Use you own blog or be on an open platform, but not Reddit which blocks VPN as mentioned above.

BTW, bridges exist so I don’t buy their excuse.

That’s ironic.

It’s also quite worrying as the biggest challenge mastodon has is the networking effect.

Few people join because few people are there and we’ll the cycle continues.

Hope they follow bridgy fed if they are on bluesky so.

But that is strange if they have a large following.

On the other hand, Tuta is still active on both Mastodon and Bluesky.
I’m so glad I switched

NPCs aside, this behaviour is an attempt at censorship.

In an environ where everyone has a mic & speak their mind, the mob keeps its relevance by being the loudest, which serves only one purpose, to drain out / censor others.

In short, this behaviour is not going to go away.

Backlash = people saying that Andy is a Nazi, fascist etc? This isn’t about backlash or questions either. The people over there are just toxic. They accuse anyone who disagrees with them of being a Nazi.

Though, Proton should continue posting on there.

That’s demonstrably false. I disagree with users on that site a lot, and in the past 3 years I’ve posted predominantly on Mastodon, have not once been called a Nazi or a fascist.

But then again, I also don’t advocate for oppressive hierarchies, regression on human rights, or fantasize about a “golden age” in recent history (which is always before minorities gained rights) when America was “great”, so I can see why nobody would confuse me for one of those things.

Am I alone in finding this label easy to avoid?

Did Andy say/imply any of that? I don’t think so.

I found the Fediverse community to be one of the worse communities I’ve been in, it’s quite alienating. That said I’ve never been called a Nazi.

As a side note: Proton was also getting some not the kindest words from people on the former bird site for this post https://xcancel.com/ProtonPrivacy/status/1883891944381931992#m

I feel like if that was the deciding factor they’d leave everything but their reddit, idk

You misunderstand: I wasn’t accusing Andy of saying/implying anything. I’m describing the conduct that typically results in Nazi/fascist accusations on social media.

What’s that supposed to mean then?

Which is not the case for Andy.

Not just the Fediverse…social media has always been like that (i.e. misinterpreting a post to mean something else entirely).

This is why Proton needs to do some self-reflection on their social media strategy. As a company reliant on a very critical audience with diverse viewpoints, politics can be a very controversial point regardless of the platform.

I wasn’t accusing Andy of anything. Andy wrote:

They accuse anyone who disagrees with them of being a Nazi.

I then said my experience was different. I disagree a lot with left-leaning folks on all matter of topics, and get called a lot of names, but never Nazi/fascist.

Separately, I mused that the reason I don’t get called that is because (insert the part you’re replying to).

That you keep misreading my posts as some obtuse accusation towards Andy is a waffles-vs-pancakes ordeal.

…yeah.

Doesn’t that imply something? You’re not called X because you didn’t do Y, Andy is called X because he did Y. That’s what I interpret from reading this, at least that’s what it sounds like.

I don’t think I’m misunderstanding anything in this case.

If you want to try to abstract my conversational English and tackle it from pure logic, I would like to point out that your interpretation is only valid if Andy said they were personally the recipient of such an accusation.

Furthermore, even if you read my statement to imply that “one reason why people get called Nazis/fascists is because they do […]”, that doesn’t preclude other possible reasons.

You’re presupposing a frame that simply doesn’t exist.

Lately I find there is more and more people on Mastodon that just instantly use distasteful names (like the mentioned Nazi). Or people that just feel entitled to everything - in case of proton constantly writing comments like “when is your CEO stepping down” or more generally “why do you rather not do this instead of that” usually written in a very passive aggressive way. Its like hey instead of trying to find something positive or discuss like normal people, they just come sh**talking.
Where are the times one could strike a perfectly normal conversation with a complete stranger on mastodon, or not read so much crap under every single post. Ugh…

You said that you don’t get called a Nazi/Fascist, even though you disagree with the people over there, and then added the following:

And I asked if Andy said/implied that or not. Because that means Andy did something like that.

Comments like this make me wonder if there’s a second, worse Mastodon I don’t know about.

I hate to pull a “you’re using it wrong” thing, but based on my experience with Mastodon I just can’t figure out how people are finding themselves in these situations, and I’d like to know how it happens.
