PriEco: New open source web search engine

PriEco has been added as a Web Search Provider in Uruky

Here you can read more about Uruky

Don’t forget to set PriEco as your top search provider

I’ve partnered with french maps “Cartes” to bring a map feature to PriEco

Apologies @maqp , I’ve moved PriEco to a new server and forgot to enable Tor. It is now live and autostarts in case of server restart. Next time please tag me so that I see it immediately

PriEco also supports setting it as a default web search engine, and it distinguishes your visited domain even though the loaded website has the exact same source, thus it’s the exact same

Questions:

  1. Are you independent or are you with a group?
  2. Do you accept donations somewhere visible, or do you do this entirely for free with no personal interests (or with interests)?
  3. Are you the kind of person who likes being direct and straightforward?

Here’s a fun fact: when I search using your search engine, the results come back in different languages.

A small observation: What’s the panel on the right side for? Someone who starts questioning that panel might suspect there are one or more issues with the service.

For example: It shows a title under “General,” but below it says “Location,” then the language. So I ask → What’s the language for? What’s the location for? Why do the results come back in different languages if I’ve set it to a fixed language, or is it for another purpose?..

What I’d find useful there is a button like: “?”, and when you click it, it expands with the clear info about that function: Title, description + function.
It’s easier and more direct.

The questions I’m asking are just to get to know you a little better.

Hi, I’m from EU and when you wrote it, it was deep night. Otherwise, I’d have replied sooner

  1. I’m the founder and pretty much the only contributor. I do get a lot of help from the community. Programming isn’t the problem for me, it’s figuring out what people want and getting new ideas for PriEco. I can do it a lot too, but it’s always nice to get outside perspectives. A good idea is much more important for me than code contribution
  2. I do accept donations. The single biggest donor donated $480 to PriEco. For now it’s only in source code repository and only in crypto. I’ll make it better. Running PriEco is super cheap and I do have a personal interest in it. But I am very user focused and wouldn’t enshitify it
  3. Yes, I try to be as transparent as possible

Languages this is my fault, I chose to not filter by language but to only boost results in preferred language. This was a mistake and I will soon be fixing

Panel General is a setting category title. Language priorities results in selected language, location too. As I said I chose incorrectly and it needs fixing to work much better. If you want I can notify you when it’s fixed

Info thanks, will add there explanation under each setting

Thanks for sharing that with me. That’s the good thing about independence, and there’s something I want to share with you—here’s my help:

  1. Have you tried observing and analyzing from the inside out and vice versa to look for bugs, etc.? This will help you strengthen the foundation even more before adding new features and functions. You might find other bugs that haven’t been discovered yet, if they exist depending on the list.
  2. I read on Codeberg and found the following: “I do currently get AI help to make the development faster, but I generally don’t vibe code and am skeptical of AI code.” → AI makes a lot of mistakes, but here I’d recommend you use your own internal reasoning in a balanced way—it’s infinitely better than any machine created by mankind. Do you know how to do that?
  3. Yes. Let me know, that way I’ll put it to the test again and help you strengthen your project.
  4. Don’t worry. Mistakes can happen or sometimes we can forget things. I understand this and I know what it’s like. You’re good.

Here’s what’s still missing and corrections whenever you’re ready to add them (if needed):

  • Date and time in search results (same thing I told Uruky in another post).
  • The social media icons and all that stuff at the bottom—it’d be better to unify them into a dropdown menu instead of having them scattered around.

For now, that’s it.

I encourage you to keep going.

Hi, what’s the percentage breakdown of donations per crypto.

Also feel free to add your service to https://donatemonero.org/

Thanks!

  1. I have a good mental map of my codebase. I do try to make it as modular as I can so that possible issues are isolated. But, I don’t do much bug scanning. For a web search engine like PriEco it’s super important to make it very usable, mainly in terms of quality, as soon as possible to be competitive. I don’t think requests are crashing out (I don’t have a reliable data) and certainly the whole website doesn’t crash down. Better bug hunting would be beneficial, but I’m the only developer so until uptime is 100% with occasional rare small downtimes + 1st of the red days in UptimeRobot was planned, the second I honestly don’t remember what was happening. Maybe the 2nd was my fault but that wasn’t directly PriEco’s. To be honest all of the downtimes are either me messing up with PriEco trying to improve it or maybeeee rare internet drops. Status page
  2. Yes, I mainly use it to brainstorm as it can provide some feedback on it + it helps me to write my thoughts down and for code snippets. I always read the whole code + improve it in case. But I understand that it is still a higher risk to introduce bugs. For vide coding in PriEco, the only entire feature was: https://prieco.net/stats as I just wanted to at least have the numbers. The page works as vibe coded. But I barely care about it. That said I am not certain enough in my code to be publicly proud of it. Yes, PriEco is open source under AGPLv3
  3. What are your domains? Design, code quality, benchmarking… to better understand how you’re trying to help

Missing

  • PriEco is one of the search providers for Uruky too.
    • There is that problem that most search engines don’t have a filter based on date. For me it’s because there isn’t a reliable way to determine age of html document online. So, PriEco stores date of crawling which is much less useful as PriEco’s crawler rarely manages to visit a web page the same day it was published (for now). It’s an issue of resources. But for later there are amazing “alliances” to which if accepted would tell me how is the whole internet updating
    • But! As it’s fairly requested feature, and I do store date of visiting pages, I can make a filter based on that
  • Footer was designed by someone else. Personally I’d say overall design is good enough for now. If you’d want to improve it, even without pull requests (just html/css) I’d appreciate it. But I see your point, maybe I should do it soon too

I hope I don’t sound passive declining to improve your feedback. I just fully now prioritize index to server good results so that PriEco can be used by more people

I don’t actually track the data

Thank you! I’ve submitted PriEco there, and it already was at Monerica

Let’s together make PriEco feature rich
What are you missing?

I have a candidate for Images and News, Videos (YouTube could be also easy, but I don’t know yet) + I’d add a setting to open the YouTube videos in Invidious or wherever you specify

And almost 2y ago I with a friend/huge contributor created a lyrics database (Old image for reference)

I have the data, let’s plug it back in

You’re welcome.

  1. It’s true that quality should be what it is. I’d add faithfulness, consistency, and robustness to that—why? Because it’s necessary, and this is built over time, not overnight. It’s great that you have a mental map, and you can use a physical piece of paper with a pencil for notes (whether basic, special, or however you see it); I think physical notes on paper are better than the internet (digital). That’s why there’s no rush—keeping calm in the middle of the storm is essential.

  2. I also use AI for translation into English, for example—otherwise, I can’t communicate in your language. The thing is, I’ve seen a study about how AI damages human reasoning, and young people are using it, certain people are using it, and they might not even realize it’s affecting the way they think. That’s why I don’t let it deceive or manipulate me.

  3. I use canva.com (design), intelligence and counterintelligence - constructive - etc. (human → mindset, no technology), I’m not a developer (I can work around the visible system and understand it from the outside, kind of like observing a company without stepping inside it), etc.

I understand the rest of what you’ve told me. Do you need a visual design? I wish I could work with HTML/CSS—it would speed up the development process—but I don’t know how to do it; that’s not my area, I have other bigger priorities.

Go for it, keep up the good work.

English is my second language, but I can communicate using it without help. Using translator is totally fine.

Yes, I understand that AI is damaging, and I must say that it did change how I code. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

If you’d want, you can design PriEco, and I’d implement the design in it. I’m fine with the current design but I’ve designed it and I’m certainly not a designer, if you see how it could be improved I’d be glad

The damage can be reversed. Physical exercise helps a lot naturally.

The current design is fine—even the background—simple, no overload or overwhelming elements, and it’s snappy because it loads fast on my mobile device.
It’s something similar to the color of grass, it’s really good.
Let me know about it.

@JojoYou

I designed the search section in test mode—take a look and let me know:

Where it says “Panel Control,” that includes settings and the other links like privacy policy, etc.
A clean interface, straight to the point.

I don’t like the little line in the search bar. It looks weird because you have two lines, that one and the one from your keyboard.

Thank you for the design. I’m sorry, but I don’t think I’ll use it

I am not 100% sure what line is there because of keyboard but I see there is additional line under the green small one on the left. I don’t like it too. Later will remove it

Hi guys! I’m improving how the index is stored and will run tests about recall as I have a suspicion.
I want to be sure before I go deep into ranking. I’m sure crawler works well
I have now index insertions on pause while I’m dealing with the index. But I do crawl and everything will get inserted as soon as I’m done
I’ll be updating you about it

I’m also thinking about donations and creating a nice page which accepts fiat (debit/credit card) and crypto. Could I ask you for donations?

You’re right, it’s at ~360M right now. I’m now improving the index architecture, so inserts are paused. But I already have over 100GB of compressed data waiting to be inserted. I believe that would cross 400M
I’m keeping you all updated here PriEco Quality Benchmarking - #8 by JojoYou
If I understood correctly how Mwmbl works, inside it’s a completely different project to PriEco

PriEco is actually 2 months older than Mwmbl, but for 3 years of its existence, I was trying to create something like Kagi, or more closely to SearX, SearXNG as I didn’t know about Kagi back then. As I don’t believe paying for web search engine by default is viable option for most people, I wanted to keep it fully free. Which isn’t possible

So, I worked on PriEco Crawler. PriEco Index is just months old, while Mwmbl is 4.5y
And as I reached 300M, I shifted my focus from scale to crawling the exact URLs PriEco users would need

Mwmbl also runs on a donated VPS, I own my hardware

I see I could seem negative here. I am truly not trying to be, in fact I learned some stuff from Mwmbl too
Their new UI is much better than the last one, and they do certainly have an architectural advantage compared to me in search speed

Edit: Also, I have an idea I should do regardless, because of it PriEco will get close to 500M after I’m done improving the index architecture

For 100th comment in this post I’ve prepared Roadmap!

The ideas there aren’t in a particular order. I did try to put the ones I want to do the soonest at the top and the ideas I have for years but never saw the light of the day at the bottom
You can vote with like/dislike and suggest new ideas

Date: Index has been rebuilt with date in it. So, I’ll be adding the filter. Or do you want to see the date of each result?

Language: has been improved too and from now PriEco isn’t supposed to show results in other languages than the 1 you have set. I tested it a bit and I’d really say it did improve relevance of PriEco results

Next: As a next step, I’m already inserting new results to PriEco
During it my main focus is ranking

P.S. I’d like to apologize, PriEco was super slow for the last few days. I’ve ripped open the index to figure out and fix the cause. It’s now fixed. And should be dramatically faster
