Portable firewall that can replace VPN?

Does this device can really replace a VPN? It came to me as too good to be true.

No, it’s marketing bullshit

If you ever see “decentralised VPN” that’s not Tor, just stay away, it’s 99.9% bullshit

So there’s no value in hardware devices like this?

Are there any hardware devices that improve privacy and security???

If its not TOR or a self-hosted VPN, its complete garbage.

Of course some types of hardware do matter. But when it comes to 99% of users, the biggest impact on privacy/security you can make is software related.

Get a decent laptop and put Linux on it.
Secure your passwords with a PG-recommended password manager
Use 2FA
Use configured Firefox or Mullvad browser
Get PG-recommened VPN

Honestly, the only major hardware recommendation is that your phone be capable of using GrapheneOS or Divest OS

There was a company that didn’t make it through the pandemic, called tinyhardwarefirewall.com that took travel routers and reflashed them with one of the open source router packages, and configured it to point to their services for a VPN and VPN minus ads. The routers were configured to not respond to pings.

They could be powered by a large USB battery, or plugged into a USB port.

Being a separate device and acting as a gateway, you could compute in public wifi places very well and mostly incognito.

I see some value in a travel router for certain types of users, especially if one has multiple devices that can exist behind the router.

I appreciate your reply!

This sounds amazing, Are there any other hardware devices that can improve user security?

You can probably research travel routers and flash software on it that is configured to point to a VPN subscription you have. Essentially what that company I mentioned did.

I’m hoping another small company picks up their business, which was run by a couple of security professionals.

“7 layer firewall” what does that even mean.

It’s some kind of cryptocurrency based thing. So I guess what they mean by “decentralized” is a bunch of people mining their crypto.

I don’t really see the need for something like this, just configure the firewall on your device. You can use whatever VPN you want or Tor and you get MAC randomization. This product is just ewaste.

My educated guess is that it’s a nonsensical jargon about the OSI layer OSI model - Wikipedia

I appreciate your reply!

I shouldn’t have asked such a broad question like “best hardware devices to increase privacy” as it really deserves its own thread or possibily even it’s own forum!
