Opinions on Iodeos

I’m using a Moto G52. I’ve been using Calyxos for a long time, however next month they are planning to stop support and I imagine that with the delay caused by Google’s changes to AOSP releases, that the next update will be the last one.

The phone is supported by Lineageos, Lineageos for Microg, Iodeos, and other ones that aren’t really relevant for privacy.

I need push notifications. Iodeos has bootloader relocking for my device. They are a fork of Lineageos for Microg, which is behind in development of Lineageos. I would feel better being behind and having the bootloader unlocking.

The question I have is if there is any specific reasons not to use Iodeos now that the closed source components have been open sourced for some time now? I haven’t really seen this OS discussed much so any opinions and criticisms would be welcome.

Hmm, that is a though one. It seems that you are out of options, you can’t use GrapheneOS, an Iphone or even CalyOS. Having bootloader relocking is a must for security. You can either stick with your stock Android or try Iodeos like you are leaning now. Privacy wise, personally I don’t think you are getting much out of Iodeos. I’d just stay with stock Android in this situation, but that is a very difficult decision.

Have you ever used a phone that’s not a flagship? Even a flagship on stock may behave horribly sometimes. Shady apps (seem to be used to subsidize the phone cost) get installed by default (uninstallable, at least), stuff like “Meta Services” and “Meta App Installer/Updater” as system apps (may be privileged, I don’t even remember at this point). Stock is also on Android 13 instead of everyone else’s OS. The device isn’t getting updates either since a little while ago. CalyxOS itself would have a higher patch level for the open source components than stock.
