Hi,
I have a free Ente Photos account and I just realised that creating a public link is no longer an option for free accounts.
I understand that they have to make a living (fair is fair) but i can’t really afford an extra service at the moment and i don’t really need a full account – i basically just have one album online at a time to share with family members and then it’s gone, the rest stays local.
Any idea for an alternative?
Thanks!
I am sorry for your financial struggle, but if we had an alternative other than the already listed items it would already be on the forum in discussions and eventually added to the website.
If you only distrute the album you could just use proton drive f.x.
I understand Ente’s position, but as a general rule, I tend to mistrust companies that removed features that were once free. I would have preferred if Ente had never made public links free in the first place. And this is from someone who pretty much never uses their Ente Photos account, and who is, hence, not really affected.
When Evernote started removing features that were free for years, it never compelled me to upgrade to their paid subscription. Never. Instead, I paid for Standard Notes and Notesnook.
I still believe in Ente Photos, but I really hope they consider their strategy carefully. Don’t make features free if you intend to make them paid features later. It does not inspire trust.
I think i feel a bit like this. I get that it’s their right but i personally don’t have much of a choice to upgrade, and now it’s forcing me to change and get my family to use yet another platform to see photos (they’re not tech-friendly and any change is disturbing). It’s not a dramatic change but it’s clearly not welcome.
I think this is a bit harsh to Ente. The fact they offer any level of free photo hosting is incredibly generous given the resources needed to do so.
If they find part of that is no longer sustainable then I see no issue with them removing it.
They might have had to do this if the feature was getting abused.
trying to think of an alternative. if it is not required to browse the albums on the website before downloading, one thing you could consider is uploading a zip or such to a limited view/download service such as Send. you could potentially give them the password through another medium, and seeing as it’s a limited view link, which will delete all traces afterwards, it would be a free alternative.
Hey, I’m someone who is really active in the Ente Community and I want to clear up some things. Sharing albums was introduced before free accounts were, I think they overlooked that this could be abused once free accounts got added. So they changed this, I don’t think they did it to get more people to subscribe to their service.
