Back in ye olde Reddit days we had a rule against editorialized post titles for people sharing links to news articles. To make this forum cleaner, to avoid duplicate discussions, and to make sure that discussions about current events aren’t skewed towards a single viewpoint, our moderation team is going to begin enforcing this rule for news posts here too going forward.
What this means: When you want to share a news article, you should paste the link in the title field of the new post:
You should avoid editing this title, unless it is wrong or cut off and you’re correcting it, then feel free to do so.
You should also add your thoughts either below the article link or in a reply. This way everyone can first get the chance to read the article and formulate their own opinions before getting into your discussion.
News posts that do not follow this structure may be revised or replaced by the moderation team at their discretion.
I think this will make it easier for people to find out about news at a glance when scrolling through the forum. Right now there are many newsworthy topics here with non-obvious titles that people may miss.
This is an English-only forum, so it would be preferable to find an alternative news source in English for something like this. You can include a second link to an article in another language elsewhere in the post if you think it adds something unique though, but an explanation of why you’re including it in English would be wanted here.
If there is a news story that truly is only reported in another language, then a translation or rewrite of the headline could be acceptable… This isn’t something I’ve really seen here before, so we might just cross that bridge when we get to it.
