I am forced to install and use Telegram for a single group, no way to avoid it and I am not happy.

Don’t give you real phone number.
If you use telegram on another device (even the portable pc version), let say a linux pc, whey will not send you 2fa to this phone number. (they will send the code to your other telegram client) So normaly, a real phone number is not needed.

I don’t. But that is when you hand out the number yourself, right? Here, the app wants the phone permission to get the number itself. Am I getting this wrong?

Deny it. If you can use Telegram via the web, do so—it’s better—and if not, use the app.

If you’re gonna bother registering for Telegram using a “fake” number, I hope it goes without saying you’ll also want to use a paid VPN. Tor could be better but I assume they’re more likely to block signups from Tor.
well if you have a spam number just use that , use public wifi for account creation. then use with proxy/vpn

the key is to use it on a number that isnt known by people if you’re really worried.

Using the verification sites means there’s a chance someone reuses that number for the same site, it’s WhatsApp, signal or likely Telegram then they would take your account afaict.
Yes and No. If you want to suceed at first then use paid number.
But, I was able to get one of my account with a free SMS verification. But, then you must logged into another telegram session elsewhere. If you don’t you will not be able to get the future SMS verification code (since the number you first use may not be available).
In my case, I suggest using the second one on a PC with the portable version of Telegram.
By having one PC + mobile (or it could be 2 PC), Telegram never send me an SMS in years, so the first phone number used is now irrelevant.
I hope my explaination is more acurate now.
I chose the easier path and used my real number, but the one I share when I have to, not the one for family and friends. Then I set the privacy settings to the strictest options, and created a user name, which will be the only thing I share.
