Meta: Messaging Interoperability: WhatsApp enables third-party chats for users in Europe

Not sure I fully understand the benefits here.

Isn’t Beeper already a 3rd party that allows to speak to everybody? It’s not from within WA but it’s not like it’s a crazy selling point either IMO.

Also, practical but definitely not more secure nor more private…

Also, the situation in EU is not that bad. People are fine moving to Signal and WA is not THAT mandatory as people like to make it sound above.
Also, I don’t really care talking to a bot hence WA is a quick and dirty way of not solving anything when I need to contact someone.

I can think of several benefits. One user mentioned that the official WhatsApp client comes with the unwanted bloat of its built-in AI. It also occurs to me that, at the very least, you wouldn’t be forced to share your entire contact list with WhatsApp. While GrapheneOS offers Contacts Scopes, it’s somewhat tedious to manually select contacts one by one (and even then, this workaround would still benefit users on other OSes). Additionally, some people get banned simply for not using WhatsApp’s official client or for avoiding the Play Store; this method could potentially bypass that kind of censorship.

Yep, EU is not that homogeneous.

In Poland it’s mainly Messenger, but everyone I talk to is on Signal.

Honestly not everyone is lucky
I got the stubborn few and I’m stil on viber waving that signal flag in an obvious mile radius, No interaction.

And in order to pull off a sneaky leave I have to pay for viber plus, no thanks unless it is desperate

Because if the leave isn’t sneaky, I get complaints from my parents and family (and even then at least my parents would be fuming after realizing, despite parents already on signal)

what do you mean, banned?

some places might be a bit more focused on a particular communication app but at least it’s not SMS and it’s also free :+1:t2:

honestly, I don’t mind not interacting with those few then.
If somebody requires me to use WA to speak with them for example, I rather just not speak with them period. :joy:
I chose myself over them.

Indeed, very ransom-y move. I would never do that either.

More of a cultural problem here I guess. Unfortunate but not enough to make me stay on something like WA.

Off-topic

In Poland it’s also SMS since RCS has reactions etc.

And it’s basicly free

So it’s even better that I have no issue to talk with everyone on Signal :slightly_smiling_face:

Unfortunately it isn’t a few

It’s a whole 35 participants

So that’s not a few I can brush off

Same

The only reason I would use WhatsApp is the fact that signal doesn’t have a WearOS App (we really need one)

+1 On ransom

Cultural problem turns into peer pressure, and you cannot combat peer pressure unless you wanna sound like a maniac or something.
Ah well I don’t use a real phone number anyway, some have a problem with it,
Well
I don’t care
Want to communicate from my real number use signal

Damn, that’s a big social circle.

You can also reply from your wearable directly from what I know (unlike iOS…).
Not sure about the really need one tho, looks like a very hyper-connected situation. But I guess maybe for urgent/work with time-sensitive matters maybe?

I moved a friend to Signal yesterday. They joked about me being a pedo/narco/shady bro but eh, I don’t really care.
Fine having that label, not like I do care educating all my peers. :man_shrugging:t2:

I opted out from peer pressure quite some time ago, feels good. :man_in_lotus_position:t2:

Didn’t knew it was that hostile.
Even less reasons to use WA then.

I mean more in a way where you can distance from your phone, therefore a standalone watch app like WhatsApp.

While it is possible from when both are connected to the internet they can sync, I cannot see message history for unlike the WhatsApp WearOS app, signal on WearOS can just act as a linked device with the same protections anyways

I am not sure how this tech actually works, but I do not trust anything by Meta. I am using Signal and I am not sure if Meta’s AI crappy WA app is going to respect any basic morality.

Even if it is supposed to be E2EE, do we know their AI is not reading/analyzing anything? What about the BackUps? Are they Encrypted? They claim it, but how do we actually know? They lie all the time.

By enabling Advanced chat privacy the AI goes out of the equation.

Encrypted backups are opt-in only unfortunately

I wanted to share with you my frustration. It’s absurd how strongly people are attached to not having another messaging app. Like if it was like letting a stranger enter in their house or like if their mother was going to die because of this. And they use the power that they are on the main messaging app to just say “no I don’t want, fuck off, we keep talking here".

It is honestly ridiculous, and even having a source people can use to make a decision, they would still say “No fuck off” or “Wow, you mean to tell me that you dont wanna use discord dms and prefer to do it on another platform, sketchy” like shut yo flashbang god damn.

ok in fairness to that guy/gal that said “sketchy”, we never talked before so skepticism was rightful but those that ive done for a while would say no like bruh and it is offending excluding the ladder.

I get your point, but like @crossroads I worry that this will be a significant hurdle. I hate that Meta is doing this on purpose.

What interoperability lets you do

Interoperability lets you:

Start 1:1 chats with WhatsApp users using their phone number

Send messages, photos and files

Communicate over an encrypted connection

Use your work email as your identity instead of a personal phone number

This makes it much easier to keep work and personal life separate while staying fully reachable

An exerpt from their privacy policy for anyone interested in their WhatsApp integration.
