Lock Screen Encryption for Desktop Operating Systems

On mobile operating systems like GrapheneOS and iOS, when you simply lock the screen of the device (without completely turning it off), the content is instantly encrypted. Is there a way to achieve this for desktop operating systems like Linux or Windows, so that the content is encrypted when the screen is locked, rather than requiring the system to be completely powered down?

I am not sure about Windows and other Desktop operating systems; though Systemd-homed does basically this for Linux. AFIAK Systemd-homed just isn’t stable enough to be shipped as a default by mainstream Linux distros.
