People seem to be getting carried away a bit. It’s is highly unlikely GrapheneOS are dictating requirements like a smaller screen or removeable battery. There is likely no input into the design of the phone itself, rather it will be a pre-planned flagship product that happens to meet GrapheneOS’s requirements.
What makes you say this?
Also, I was only spitballing there. Who knows anything right now?
The people closest to the project’s public comms (real-time chat in Discord for example which I am not part of) are fairly confident of this. Preinstalled GrapheneOS devices are something they might pitch in the long term depending on success. A GrapheneOS-edition hardware design is a massive commitment of financial resources from the OEM which would be even further in the future if at all.
The objective/result of the OEM partnership at this stage is essentially a non-Pixel device that happens to be GrapheneOS compatible (with a host of non-user facing benefits like the OEM helping with the device support, maybe GrapheneOS getting full partner access to AOSP etc.)
Hmmm. Alright.. makes sense. But I’m hoping Motorola was able to accommodate at least some of GOS’s preferences hardware wise and preferences of select specs. We’ll have to wait and see.
The US, Europe, and others are no better; we need to stop with this constant bashing of everywhere outside the West.
Yes, they are doing so through doing supporting the SPU (Secure Processing Unit) and MTE (Memory Tagging Extension) on a Qualcomm Snapdragon flagship SoC. These are critical hardware features which have stopped them from being able to support other platforms before.
What I meant more was the consumer facing specs - screen, size, cameras, physical kill switches, etc.
Ah, I understand what you mean. I don’t think GrapheneOS as a project have expressed any real preference for particular hardware specs outside a desire for:
- privacy switches with a strong sensible threat model
- proper depth-sensing/3D imaging tech Biometrics Explained - Privacy Guides in cameras so face unlock is an option again
They probably have other ideas too.
I expect if Moto would make it like a enterprise solution, if they are to preload GOS.
Sigh, I reeally hope it is not Moto.
Don’t worry it’s going to be Huawei ![]()
Unfortunately there are no iFixit guides for the modern flagship Motorola phones. Likely indicates that this new one will also have very poor repairability, even compared with the Pixel lineup…
If GOS still supports Pixels in the future, I’m not sure I will make the switch.

I stand corrected! Very cool. Those parts are pretty cheap too.
Before criticising and being disappointed that it’s Motorola for one reason or another, wait for an official statement from Motorola and the GrapheneOS teams regarding which phones will be compatible, their performance, the implementation, etc.
No matter which OEM decided to partner with GrapheneOS, it was always extremely unlikely that the upcoming hardware would be better than the supported Pixels. The biggest benefits of a partnership would be for people who simply don’t want to support Google, or, more importantly, hopefully increased availability in regions where Pixels are less common.
I think Motorola has pretty decent availability globally, so that could be nice for a lot of people.
Wait until nation states deems the device Motorola sells problematic and could restrict or outright ban that particular device if it makes GOS easy to acquire (which is a problem for many countries given its very high security). They can’t mess with iPhone cause Apple is already too big and grandfathered in.
Mark my words. It is only a matter of time. Someone will do it first and will snowball from there. Critically thinking about this + intuition + tech history = reasonable prediction.
Motorola Mobile is owned by Lenovo per Wikipedia. Lenovo is generally considered Chinese-American, hence why it hasn’t really been sanctioned like Huawei.
AFAIK, Google Pixels aren’t banned in China even though they’re not sold there. I’ve never had any issues bringing my phone into that country.
Chinese customs are more relaxed than many countries, including the US. The issue is more to use Pixels with chinese SIMs.
GrapheneOS doesn’t deny the rumor: https://nitter.net/GrapheneOS/status/2027747567769973083#m
