Isolate your social media?

Hello,

I was just wondering if its possible to isolate certain social media’s I use by using a burner phone number and a non revealing email on them, or is it too late to change them now? Mainly I wanted to decouple my twitter from any traces of who I am. But my new concern is that if I link the new email it will expose the new email I have

I don’t understand why you need to use a phone number for social media, but for email, I recommend to use an email aliasing service.

I have proton, should I just use an alias on that? As for phone numbers, some social media’s are asking for it sadly

Alias is used to protect you primary email address, so it’s better to have different alias for each accounts. Like if you had 10 social media, then you need 10 alias.

Oh I didn’t know about that because I don’t have any social media.

The Fediverse?

I too don’t have any social accounts. Social media = Evil empire! But to answer your question, yes, use a disposable phone number. There’s lots of services that offer this if you do a search. Some pay, some free. I think Google has or used to have an option to get a free disposable phone number. Also check with your cell phone provider. They also offer additional disposable phone numbers for free. For example, T-Mobile calls it Digits I believe.

Social media, at least the kind where people use their real names add their friends to it, are fundamentally incompatible with privacy. Facebook knowing your email address is the least of your concerns here. Withdrawing from social media is the single most important thing you can do for your privacy. Considerations like should I use this or that VPN are all irrelevant if the first thing you do is head to Facebook.

You can change your primary e-mail to your alias e-mail. And I do believe phone numbers are mandatory now on Twitter. I use a VoIP number as my spam number. If a service doesn’t accept the number, I won’t use them.

I think its too late to make any privacy changes to existing social media accounts whether it be for email or phone number or any other quasi PII. Not much to it unless you make brand new accounts if you still must use social media.
