I want to learn more about networking, and I found that Wireshark, one of the most known app for doing analysis and monitoring the network. But the app itself include proprietary code in it, so I want to know is that a good choice to install and use, does it send any analytics to their servers? Thanks!!!
YES! It is very safe to use and is popular for a reason. Feel free to use it.
Wireshark is GPLv2 licensed, meaning no proprietary code can be BUILT into the application. However, proprietary code can be loaded into a running application.
What proprietary code are you referring to? Also, it’s a fallacy to assume all proprietary code is evil, its just hard to analyze to make that decision. I suspect it’s some proprietary network protocols so the application can actually analyze them?
But yes, the application is a golden standard of network analysis, and one of my favorites I believe anyone doing network analysis must know.
