If it means those sites that keep archiving deleted comments lose access then I’d consider it a privacy win overall (as annoying as it may be to come across “thanks! That worked!” In response to a deleted comment), although one should always still assume your comments are being backed up somewhere

Do you think anonymous internet access is becoming impossible, and what can users realistically do to preserve it?

The end game of all of this is self hosting and federation. Social media is only going to get worse

As the one OT comment in the Rossmann thread points out, social media is overrun by Russian and Chinese trolls and bots anyway. It’d be good for everyone to get away from it.

Wonder if you could discuss the secure paste feature added to GrapheneOS. It’s a great feature that everyone should enable imo…

I just used libreddit to access some site. Rarely need it but it works. At least that

I think a way better idea is to block bots that mass access pages and click on every link… their arguments are nonsensical

Reddit is only needed for older things, also cultural things. I am on Lemmy and forums now, but you do miss out. Like where would I discuss Silo theories if not on Reddit? On Lemmy you can just choose a good server and make your own community, advertize heavily and you get some people.

Patreon supports RSS Podcasts! The WebUI is horrendous so this is a must. Desktop UI only and very hidden but at least that works! I nearly gave up on it

I am using secure paste now!

As mentioned, Flutter apps like Obtainium cannot access the clipboard but there is a little message shown and you grant it access and it works.

KDE Connect though crashed unless I gave it permissions.

But overall it just works! Florisboard’s internal clipboard and sync from system still works, and cross-“profile” (work profile, private space) clipboard sync also works.

I agree that small web type selfhosting is nice. But I find it really intimidating, because you need to do so much stuff to protect them, better even over tailscale or whatever.

Still, I will soon™

This small scale hosting became more common with the Fediverse which is nice. Sadly, for now the fedi is nice but really bad to use, no algorithms, less features than Discourse etc.

Re: iPhone hacking, obvious mention that GrapheneOS is not hackable as far as we know.

USB Port blocking rules!

Of course only possible if you can use AUX ports for music and also don’t need to have bluetooth on all the time… which will not be possible with the new Motorola either, because they didn’t bother to out in a headphone jack.

4h reboot on GrapheneOS works very fine tbh, you have clocks that work on “direct boot” so alarms still work in the morning. Thats the whole reason why they went away from full disk encryption somehow.

And “charging only when locked” for the USB port is at least something. Actually turning it off and using a headphone jack would be sweet…

Privacy has gone out the window for 95%+ of internet users. You wouldn’t believe the conversations I’ve seen some people have with Claude, ChatGPT. They include their personal info, pasting tax documents - giving tech companies EVERYTHING.

I don’t think most people understand the implications of what it means either. There’s no regulations. Nobody has any idea what they can or cannot do with this data that they have. Frontier labs can sign pledge after pledge yet seemingly there are consistent incidents in which user’s code was stolen, or even worse, their identity.

There’s so much more that’s bound to happen on the topic of Anonymity, but long story short, I wouldn’t ever expect anonymity while browsing Reddit.

It’s also an anti-censorship loss.

I wonder how long until Reddit requires an account just for browsing.

Already do if you use a VPN

I know the issue you’re talking about, I suffered from it for a while as well, but I found a Mullvad server (more than one actually) that’s been working fine with Reddit for several months now. They’re out there, just gotta change servers and re-try.

I always wondered how iOS can expose soo many things on a locked phone while still being secure.

Turns out they can’t either XD

On Cars: at least in the EU, new cars must have an “eCall” emergency SMS system builtin.

Which is pretty damn creepy on its own, as it already opens the attack surface to remotely enable the microphone and spy on you.

But I would expect that eCall system to be builtin to the rest of the system, and there is no law to forbid that (which would be very nice).

Apparently it is not illegal to disable eCall, so for now that is not an issue.

Can you please from now on have a “sources” section in the show notes where you put links to the news articles that you cite?

Sources are listed on the website and sent out as a newsletter when the stream starts.

We could definitely link it better to make accessing it easier. Thanks for the feedback.

Its hard to juggle between servers when YouTube does this too. And even when I find one that works its usually only temporary
