Is there any working frontend for Youtube?

Potential solution here:

You can try
https://yewtu.be/
though youtube with ublock hard/ medium is fine as well i think

I use Newpipe and dont have problems. It works better than Libretube in my experience.

I am managing to use invidious from my browser, but it’s far from ideal. Does any app work with a VPN (on GOS)? LibreTube and NewPipe don’t seem to work for me.

Grayjay works for me using Proton VPN in certain less used countries locations

why do you need a VPN to watch youtube. i usually add youtube clients to vpn exclusions as fingerprinting is already taken care of by the client and only ip is exposed which is fine and saves me bandwidth.

It is the vpn triggering captcha, which breaks the youtube front end.

If you have a private VPN IP which is not recognised by Google then it should work.

I personally exclude my YT frontend from VPN.

I guess that could. I am just very reluctant to exclude apps from the VPN, for privacy reasons. Maybe some apps can proxy videos, no?

I think DDG does it, if you found it through their search, not super convinient though.

IMO using newpipe without VPN is good enough as it scrape youtube instead of actually loading their page, the info newpipe send to YT is very limited.

One bad thing about excluding apps from VPN is that it could conflict with KIll Switch on some VPN apps like Proton.

I didnt try doing the same using the original wireguard app but i prefer not being limited to connecting to a specific server, for reliability reasons.

There is a still a history of all videos watched by an IP, which is bad IMi.

Not true. I just tested and it works fine.

The exclusion principle that keeps coming up seems like a white flag in a trench war to me.

Also, for those who have installed a VPN such a mullvad on their router, how are you excluding certain apps? or do you mean that you are split tunneling certain devices through WAN?

Right, not sure why I said otherwise. You can toggle Always-on-VPN without toggling on Block Connections without VPN and it will work though. Another option is to put all your non-VPN apps into the work profile/private space (or private space when it finally comes to GOS)

Private space is fully supported on GrapheneOS and in fact will be supported in secondary users when todays release 2025051900 is out.

Just starting using FreeTube for my desktop PC and really like the experience so far.
I use Grayjay for my phone, SmartTube for the TV unless its a Roku device in which case I use Playlet.

Sorry, it’s just that you have to enable in the settings and before you could click on the app and click “Duplicate in Private Space” (something like that) so I had completely forgotten it was actually there.
