Ireland is set to become the next presidency of the European Union Council.
If Denmark used their platform to push for mandatory client-side scanning/chat control, it appears that Ireland is focusing heavily on social media age verification.

Would this apply to decentralized platforms/the fediverse? Wonder how they’ll enforce this.
If it’s mandatory for all, it would mean small and decentralized platforms (servers) will be shut down. If there’s a threshold, e.g. servers/services with more than e.g. 100.000 users, it might be OK for fediverse and decentralized messengers.
One problem might be P2P and maybe delta chat. Public and private groups can be made with existing email or no account at all.
But I would say there is no way to control and enforce this on federated networks, unless you go North Korea or Tajikistan way. Though I think it’s OK for governments, as most people don’t even know about those, and I doubt number of users of decentralized networks is more than 0,5% of total social network/IM users.
