iPhone versus Mainstream Android

Probably Skype as can be seen in Skype Security Evaluation in 2005.

Signal was a re-productisation of Redphone & TextSecure which were available in 2010 just before the time iMessage and FaceTime were also released:

When iMessage launched in 2011, it was the first widely available messaging app to provide end-to-end encryption by default, and we have significantly upgraded its cryptography over the years.

You can just disable automatic software updates and security updates, which is two separate things. If you are still feel unnerving after that, just block Apple’s IPs.

Although I doubt that Chat Control, if passed, will be implemented at the system level. It may be implemented at the app level instead. It doesn’t make sense for a system designed only for chatting to be implemented at the system level, and Chat Control actually has some exceptions. In that case, I suspect Signal and iMessage will simply withdraw from the EU.

Honestly privacy aside I think ios feels more well put together and has much higher quality apps available in the main app store, whereas vanilla android without installing apps outside the play store feels significantly more limited. Android really shines best with grapheneos and/or using tons of very high quality apps available from accrescent, f droid, obtainium, etc. My work phone is a pixel 9a, obviously due to corporate security policies we’re not allowed install anything from ou tside the play store and coming from grapheneos back to vanilla pixel feels like a huge leap backwards imo. Most of my favorite android exclusive apps aren’t on the play store so aside from the fossify suite there’s not really much available. I’m taking it as a trial run for if google eventually forces all android app installs exclusively through the play store or if something happens to grapheneos and that would no longer be an option anymore (currently seems like they’re still in a good spot but you never know)

I concur, in a word with Chat Control I don’t think Apple would actually comply by forcing scanning in iMessage and instead would just stop offering it in the EU. Same thing happened with ADP in the UK.

And to Apple’s credit, they openly fight these things and almost certainly were the ones who leaked the UK’s attempt at secretly forcing an ADP backdoor.

This would be a good outcome. EU citizens are much more likely to fight back when they start seeing messages on their phones saying that their favorite apps are no longer offered in their region.

Even if spyware such as chat control is not implemented by the OS, “sideloading” has never been allowed on iOS, and is increasingly difficult on Android. Apple and Google will most definitely remove non-compliant apps from their official stores, and users will be trapped all the same. This is why I urge people to ditch Apple and Google and start using a custom ROM or Linux phone now.
