PGP encrypted “source available” free email client (supports only gmail). Very barebones though (doesn’t support notifications). Cross platform but this is for the iOS app. Edit: I forgot to mention that it’s been audited https://cure53.de/pentest-report_flowcrypt.pdf
Why I think this tool should be added
The alternative is closed source and only supports PGP encryption with a subscription. I personally very rarely use PGP, so I wouldn’t pay yet another subscription for it, not to mention that open source/source available is usually recommended over competitors even if it’s less feature-rich
Gmail is not recommended by Privacy Guides nor should anything that needs Gmail to be used is to be recommended - no matter how good or useful it may be.
Using Gmail with encryption makes little sense when there are Gmail equivalent alternatives that are much more private with better UI/UX (if you ask me).
Sometimes, you need to use gmail, e.g. because your company uses it. Saying that this shouldn’t be recommended because it’s for the non-recommended gmail ignores that privacyguides still recommends iOS app, a non-recommended OS. In the first place, if you use proton or tuta then there is no need for an email client, so it was my understanding that this category is for people that need to use non-recommended email providers, but I could be wrong.
I believe this platform is to discuss your personal privacy things. When it comes to enterprise, you’ll obviously have to do what the company does so there’s little people can do about it and hence is seldom discussed if at all.
Yeah, cause half the world used iOS and half uses Android. So, they have to out of necessity. Okay, maybe not half but a significant portion at-least in the western world. It’s not binary or black or white always.
I’m not sure that “we don’t recommend this service so we won’t recommend ways to use it more privately” is a good argument. Gmail has 1.8 billion users worldwide, and it is safe to assume that some of them might need to use PGP for whatever purpose. Even if it’s 0.001%, that’s still thousands of people. I am personally one of them. Of course, it’s still a source available email client regardless of PGP encryption, which is generally more preferred than a proprietary app like apple mail, particularly since its icloud backup is not E2EE.
I should note that the app will support outlook apparently, not that it’s too different from gmail
Not an argument. It’s just that Gmail and relevant/associated services and products are not advised because it would mean the use of Gmail. If you want to use Gmail, but privately and believe this is a good way to go about it - you do you. But doesn’t mean it must be or needs to be recommended officially on here.
But simpler options such as Proton exists for this very purpose. To have privacy by default without the need to rely on other privacy add-ons. The goal should be for people to ditch Gmail to others or only use it for very specific use cases if need be. But today, with email, no reason to use Gmail.
I hope you know that private messages can still be sent via Proton with a link that will appear in the email to a non Proton address.
