Indian court orders blocking of Proton Mail

What you mean by “full fbi mode”? ProtonMail comments on Apophis Squad member responsible for attacks against ProtonMail has been arrested - ProtonMail Blog You can see from their response that it was all OSINT data provided from several sources including LE. The attackers were attacking their services so it makes sense they wanted to escalate stuff legally.

Proton mail is not the best when it comes to anonymity, they will cooperate with LE and they already did in multiple cases from several reports that were shared in this forum and their Transparency report. It was just these skids opsec was terrible.

The real tyranny would be banks & services not accepting protonmail.com domain in emails.

bypassing API blocks is ez.

In its complaint filed in January, the New Delhi-based firm called for the regulation or blocking of Proton Mail in India, as the email service reportedly refused to share details about the sender of the allegedly offensive emails, despite a police complaint.

smh

Chinese too

Yeah, I’m literally about to move to self-hosting everything… I’m sick of this BS.

The more and more central systems make it harder to be on central systems the more impetus it gives everyone to just decentralize.

I got my wife on board after a bunch of conversations and finally showing her this video: [Video] It's time to stop using SMS, here's why! - Privacy Guides

And she saw all the news on Chinese hacking SMS which gave me the opportunity to explain that the US has had this ability for a long time and we had a really constructive conversation about protecting the kids privacy.

Once she was on board, we made sharing images of the kids on family chats only possible on Signal per our request which then prompted a lot of questions and discussion that I took the time to go over with our family and a good mass has moved over while I assume those too stubborn will receive some forward images of the kids through WhatsApp which mitigates the amount that would have been out there before.

These things take time but always be on the look out for opportunities to bring the message up casually. Avoid bringing it up every single day. I am the tin foil hat wearer of the family and I say enough so that when people have a genuine curiosity, they can approach me and I won’t judge them and I do my best not to chew their ear off.

Most of all, I’m always ready to drop anything to have these conversations and to help my family migrate or learn. At first it was isolating, but slowly it has become a small movement in the fam that reaches out to me due to the consistency and how much I display I care about the safety of the family and our kids.

For such a strong opinion on wanting to self host, I don’t think you know all that self hosting entails. And if you do, I’m perplexed by your comment.

You self hosting a service that you can independently use it yourself like Ente Photos is one thing - but self hosting email that you will use to communicate with almost 100% of the people who do not self host, I don’t think this solves the problem of centralized email service.

Also, it’s a bit of an overreaction when you directly jump to self hosting as a “solution” when you know simply using a VPN or Tor will bypass this issue.

Your responses or ideas to resolve an issue don’t seem measured.

Lol do you even homelab bro!?

I think you are unaware of how big the homelab community is growing.

Re: self hosting email

Yeah, I’m aware of the drawbacks of email as a technology. My argument is since I’m hosting a bunch of stuff, why keep copies of my emails in one location outside of my control? I trust Proton but if I’m already hosting everything else why not email too?

Yeah there’s copies of what I say to others in their email, but I treat email like I treat this forum and sms. It’s all public chats. However if you go about scraping them all together to profile me there’s a greater barrier to entry and I am not that interesting versus if I have everything in one spot, why go through the trouble of doing VPN just so I can reach my email.

My contention was more about you jumping directly to self hosting for an issue that can easily be bypassed - and talking about a solution that is not applicable or possible by 99.9% of folks.

Because self hosting works for me, I’m not telling everyone else they have to.

this guy needs a seperate lab lol.

How has Nextcloud been for you? Others on the forum have mentioned having problems with it.

This is a bit off topic here but I’ll answer this last one and we ought to avoid more discussion here about self hosting.

similar to others I use nextcloud for a couple thing myself but I wouldn’t move my family over. Call it a hopeful enthusiats install that wants it to work. They have had some releases that overhaul parts of the system so I believe it will get there just… Painstakingly slowly. But I still love the team and community.

I’d love to chat more about any questions you have in a DM or separate thread!
