For me, with people I have gotten to download the app but I do not talk to frequently (both iOS) I only get one tick, so I know the message isn’t even being delivered.
I hate it too, but it’s a principle for me. I’ve even had friends who surprised me by lying about downloading it, and they didn’t. I’ve started ignoring all SMS and iMessages. If they don’t care, then they’re not worthy of being my close friends, and we’ll just talk in person. I don’t even send personal emails anymore, only business emails. It is what it is.
Nice. I have a slight feeling like these kind of scenarios can succeed. I myself am considering this for my family - removing myself at some point from WhatsApp, which is the default messenger here, and telling everyone decisively that I’m out, and you’ll be able to find me on Signal. I feel like it could work out.
Didn’t work for me. I now use WhatsApp. You kinda need a normie messenger. Especially if you’re ever going to meet anyone new. You need to be on a platform they’re already on. At least WhatsApp doesnt have the whole, public profile ecosystem that Fb and Instagram has.
From my experience, the main messenger of the 20 year olds these days is Instagram. It’s a disgrace.
i swap this around. they need to be on a platform i am already on ![]()
Honestly its hard to make that argument because you could essentially just lose contact with that person, you basically just give them zero options.
not-wittingly is right when he says that some handshake needs to happen in order to get them there which also means using the platform that you don’t wanna use and often fighting it as much as you can to avoid profiling.
This is why im currently going to try advocating for Fluxer with bridges to Discord from one of the local communities or matrix that expands the list further and will be adding signal to it, still in the process and happen in November as they’re pretty busy as is.
The alternative is to just stand your ground and respect other’s boundaries. First you have to sell to them what makes signal worth using (Delayed Response, FOMO, if you dont have to be sneaky, show how easy it is or set it up for them and let them use it later, You can also explain why protecting most metadata is important, I should work on something that well lays out why E2EE is enough and what metadata can tell about you, but one quick shot you can throw is the Ex-NSA Chief “We kill people based on metadata”, I think its more effective than a visual representation or whatever it may be)
you can swap this again: instead of you lose contact with the person, the person loses contact with you. you give them an option. they give you an option. you give them as many options as they give you. it is all about perspective
i won’t compromise on my values just to stay in contact with someone. and others value the contact to the person higher and install whatsapp. which is fine too. no right or wrong here
It’s different though because they are already on all that stuff and so is everyone else. So you’re asking the other person to download an app they have never heard of just to speak to you.
And presumably you were already talking to them there at some point.
Also man if you ever wanna meet new people and keep in touch somehow you can’t expect them to download an app just for you.
To be clear I hate all this.
thats literally disrespecting each other’s boundary. This is why you need to set a middle ground between you and the other contact.
By all means if that’s what you wanna do that’s your right but dont complain that you’re all lonely because of this. Especially infuriating when Loneliness is increasing more and more.
All of us including naomi brockwell have give sneaky and non sneaky options to get them to switch.
I also agree that some allowance is necessary especially for elderly people, are you going to try getting elderly people to message you and call you on signal? good luck with that
Is there a list off these tips?
The only one I know is to respond far slower to messages on WhatsApp
One strategy I’ve used: complaining that [non-privacy messenger] isn’t working or has usability issues. It’s the same thing others do when I try to get them to use Signal. Just keep implanting the idea that you’re having issues with their preferred messenger and then ask to just use Signal instead.
For WhatsApp, perhaps complain about not getting notifications and that you don’t have these problems with Signal. Purposely ignore messages. You could also just turn off WhatsApp notifications off as well to make it more believable. If you’re on Grapheneos, isolate WhatsApp to its own profile and keep that profile off in the background. Not only will it be better for privacy, it could potentially show their messages as undelivered until you turn that profile back on, though someone else may have to confirm since I don’t have WhatsApp anymore.
Since I’m in the US and everyone defaults mostly to iMessage and sometimes Google Messages, I purposely stopped using RCS and removed Google Messages from my GrapheneOS phone. I now have the unreliability, group message breaking, and media compression issues of SMS/MMS to complain about. “Can we just use Signal, everything will work a lot better on that?”
The whole point is to create friction for them. It makes it their problem for not using Signal instead of your problem for not wanting to use their spyware messenger. Most people don’t care about privacy. Is this deceptive and manipulative? Obviously. It’s for their own good though.
I love Jabber with OMEMO more because it stands for true freedom; we can use any Jabber server to contact people who registered on another Jabber server. The pity is there are so few people using Jabber with OMEMO.

I held it off for the longest time until my mom forced me to install WhatsApp, back in middle school. By now I kinda made peace with having to use it, just like I have with Discord. However, my immediate family is on Signal, and I’ve also had successes in moving IRL friends to Signal. Although, most of my platonic messaging is on Discord.
I actually reserve discord for the local convention, especially since im maintaining a canvas rn.
But I plan to get a community then move to fluxer once its over by Next Year as I did not mean to get myself this deep into the rabbit hole.
It doesn’t seem the convention wants to move to fluxer but it’s part of their consideration so far, Ive managed to convince a few. And ill pull the red pill blue pill for my local community. After also finishing up a local community obviously.
Honestly I’m glad Fluxer exist, it seems like a more stable and promising project than Stoat.
