How to watch youtube while always-on VPN is present?

Also NewPipe version 0.27.5 update is out and take care of the login problem for the time being.

That’s incorrect, it doesn’t take care of that.

This hotfix release fixes YouTube videos not loading due to the error “IOS player response is not valid”, see Issue #11934 and Pull Request TeamNewPipe/NewPipeExtractor#1262.

Note

This release only addresses the most pressing error that prevents YouTube video details from loading.
We are aware there are other problems, and we will soon make a separate release to solve them.

Right now, I am not able to use Libretube at all while connected to Windscribe. IOS player response is not valid

I use FreeTube with a TOR proxy. Seems to be very robust.

Yeah… The same error happens on other NewPipe forks, for example, so that means that the IPs you’re using are blocked.

I used LibreTube for months before it broke, and moved to Clipious. It began acting strange, so I’ve stayed on Gray for a few months now.

Also, perhaps this could fix your issue, but I’ve known LibreTube to be very unreliable anyway.

I use BraveNewPipe and IVPN I rarely have any problems.

MullvadVPN sucks for youtube.

At this time Newpipe, Grayjay, Libretube and Freetube (and probably others) have already implemented workarounds to avoid Youtube litiming rate that work well for the time beeing.
Mullvad has little to do with that.

Yeah, you’re probably right. MullvadVPN has just being annoying for me last few months. Not just for Youtube I had to change server alot every day.

On Grayjay, I still have messages like “blocking attempt detected” and then it reloads the video (infinite loop).

I don’t think this is resolved (at least not on GJ Android).

Yes, the problem is coming back but it’s the cat and mouse game. You have to live with it if you want to use YouTube without logging in.

Grayjay’s “infinite loop” is super annoying at least on Newpipe/forks remember where it stops.

On Newpipe “Sorry, something went wrong.” error. You can just reload the video a few times and the video wil play as normal.

You can try to change your server so that it can access the type of content that you want to access. Also, try connecting to the VPN before opening the YouTube so that your IP address is masked.

At this point, I’ll just create an account. Ugh.

Never. I’d rather exempt the app/browser used for Youtube from the VPN.

Newpipe update for those who never loose faith

Some of the apps like freetube, newpipe do have a proxy functionality. I have no problems using mullvad and watching jutube with a tor proxy.

Resist, resist, resist. I will never yield to them.

Hope that helps someone.

PS: a tip, you can create a new identity with tor to switch to another node and effectively change your ip if one gets blocked. (Consider running a tor node to help seed the network)

Has anyone tried using a VPN Extension that runs within a web browser like the Mullvad VPN Extension in Firefox???

Then just open another web browser to view YouTube so YouTube can see you’re a legitimate user.

I can’t believe you can use YouTube without logging in? I always login and use my real IP address for YouTube

I don’t think that is how Mullvad VPN’s browser extension works. The VPN isn’t working “within” the browser nor is it just limited to the browser where the extension is installed. The extension is not actually providing the VPN connection.

The extension is meant to be used in addition to the VPN, it isn’t a standalone way to use Mullvad VPN (or at least it wasn’t the last time I used it, and appears to still be the case based on Mullvad’s disclaimer: “This is not a VPN app and does not replace the functionality of one

If for some reason you don’t want to (or can’t) watch youtube with a VPN (hasn’t been an insurmountable problem for me personally), you can choose a VPN that offers “exclusive” split tunneling [1] and exclude 1 browser or your Youtube frontend. I personally wouldn’t do this, since Google is one of the main privacy violators I want to protect against, but if you are already logging into your google account to watch youtube, you wouldn’t be giving up much additional privacy.

I can’t believe you can use YouTube without logging in?

It’s been over 10 years since I’ve even had an active youtube account. It hasn’t been an impediment for me personally.

  1. Exclusive = by default everything goes through the VPN tunnel, except apps that you specifically exclude ↩︎

I have no problems using YouTube with always-on ProtonVPN on Android. Both NewPipe and browser version work without any problems. I also use ProtonVPN without an account and for free, so it is as basic as it gets.
