How to choose which PC hardware to buy for new PC

For this PC Tower I want it used for general purposes including some minor gaming so it’ll have to be Windows 10 Pro.

I’m just hoping I can buy Windows 10 Pro for a new PC Tower as I’m struggling to find a legitimate and 100% genuine version of Windows 10 Pro on USB or DVD as it seems Windows 11 Pro is the only version that’s available… :disappointed_relieved: :disappointed_relieved: :disappointed_relieved:

Windows 10 will not get security fixes soon, so you will be actively harming your security, so if you are gonna use windows use Windows 11

My Annoying Linux User Opinion

Just use Linux.

I appreciate your reply!

I checked from the official Microsoft site and Windows 10 will still be supported until Oct 2025:

I’ll upgrade to Windows 11 by then anyway.

However, that only provides a download link and not a “Purchase Link”. :sob: :sob:

Oh, you need a key? Well a Windows 11 key will work on 10 (and vice-versa).

You’re 100% correct so choosing the OS is done. However, I’m still trying to find the PC hardware brands that are known for their protection of user security and user privacy…

If you will be building the PC from off the shelf components, I think specific components might have a bigger impact than specific brand. With respect to processors, newer CPUs tend to have newer security features. But even within the same generation and brand of CPU there can be significant differences in security features depending on what segment of the market it is geared towards.

IIRC intel 12th gen or newer, or AMD’s “Pro” lineup tend to have fuller sets of security of features.

For components like motherboards, I tend to try to buy from brands that have a presence in something beyond just the mainstream consumer or enthusiast/gaming markets (e.g. enterprise, business, servers, etc), but I don’t if that is actually beneficial in practice or not.

Motherboards being notoriously insecure is a known issue, and I don’t really think there are any brand exceptions.

I would not base the decision on the brand at all, I would first find a motherboard that has all the features you want, then research that motherboard specifically. You really have to do it on a model-by-model basis because there is no brand consistency with this product whatsoever.

Pretty much and you’ll only ever see that in server grade hardware anyway or packaged professional workstations (ie like Precision) etc.

Given that info, among the brands, which one do you think have a reasonable support lifetime? By that I mean, which brand do you think will keep their BIOS/Firmware updated the longest?

Items in the business/enterprise space, mostly because you’re paying for that. Consumer market really only cares about initial sale so they will be looking at minimum cost.
