How does Substack know my real location when I use a VPN?

were you using a vpn location or “exit node” (i’m not sure the actual terminology for vpns) that’s in your country? if so, substack would have the info of the country from your vpn.

There is a relatively easy fix for that if you’re keen on setting up your VPN differently.

I recommend setting it up with Wireguard via the terminal with the kill switch enabled using iptables. Mullvad has a simple guide for this. Just add a couple lines of code in the config file before putting in the Wireguard folder and turning it on.

This way, your connection is indeed 100% guaranteed.

this is interesting, and i’ll look into it. when i reached out to mullvad to ask about this exact issue, they said, “It’s better to use the application since this has firewall integration
to avoid leaks.” i wonder if there isn’t consensus on their team? seems like if they knew the app 100% has a chance to leak on linux, and there was a better way, then their customer service would know about it? but maybe not..?
