GrapheneOS will drop Google Pixel exclusivity with 'major' Snapdragon-powered devices coming

Motorola US has dreadful G series, EU and asia has somewhat decent choice. Moto G100 CN/Moto G67 Power has 7000mah, probably the largest outside China right now. Larger battery with GOS could be having decent battery level than Pixel.

Our hardware partner is going to be announcing the partnership soon, so you won’t need to wait nearly that long to see they’re a huge company that’s officially partnered with us and doing most of the work on this on their end. It’s not being announced in 2027

This is from their Mastodon, in reply to someone from a few days ago

In my opinion, the most important factor here is that the manufacturer question will need a way of marketing it along with their existing line up. Imagine Samsung releasing the Z Fold 8 with the option of users being able to download a more secure operating system than the one they provide. Not a good look for Knox. So I expect it to be a manufacturer who needs to improve their reputation security wise and is planning to develop the relationship beyond just providing compatible hardware.

It’s also got to be someone who’s prepared to annoy Google (who I expect already know who it is.)

An announcement from the OEM is now supposedly coming in March 2026.

Very exciting news, but GOS sort of gave the impression that the new phones will be released this year. If it’s released in 2027, the SD gen 5 will be surpassed by the gen 6. Not that it’ll be a huge problem, but there was this expectation that it’ll be cutting-edge and provide class-leading performance. Hopefully, Google will continue to support the Pixel series, as the Pixel 11 sounds like it could be a better year with meaningful upgrades.

pixel still has long way to go don’t exepect pixel 11 to be huge upgrade it never will be. graphene os moving out of pixel is right choice because they really had hard time on pixel 10 gos development.

Has GOS announced the end of future Pixel support?

no they never announced anything like that but google made it harder for them to por gos to new pixel devices that’s why the swithed to the new oem. supporting pixel in the future is very time consuming process unlike before they had access to the device trees of pixel and everything but now its not like that that’s why moving to new oem is wise choice.

I think they’ve actually been very clear that it will be 2027 for a while now. Even early on they only ever said 2026 at the earliest.

It’s Motorola looking for a way to distinguish themselves in the market with a more secure offering to challenge Samsung’s Knox brand. Motorola has been aggressively trying to eat at Samsung’s market share specifically and adopting Graphene provides them with a security brand with a significant existing customer base which they can challenge Knox with.

Nothing else makes anywhere near as much sense. No other major manufacturer has as much to gain and a spot in their existing strategy that fits GOS as well as Motorola.

the new oem will be official announced on march i am pretty excited for that

I wish Discourse had a way to gamble our internet points here so we could place bets on which OEM we think it is without getting into the mess of real moneys.

I have a Pixel8 and I’m debating to sell this phone once the official one comes out. Anyone know if there are any security benefits to this? Otherwise I may just stay put until I hit EOL as well.

It has been mentioned that the first iteration(s?) with the new OEM will be less secure compared to the newer Pixels. Don’t remember where I read this though, has been a while.

We don’t know who the OEM is nor the model of phone that will be compatible with GOS. Until we have that information, it’s all speculation.

i don’t see any security benefits right now but you will get newer hardware, good gpu and many more pixel is very poor in all aspect except camera compared to all other phones at this price range. you don’t need to seel your pixel just keep it for now

The Titan M2 will certainly be more secure than whatever integrated SE Qualcomm uses.

Some comments from GrapheneOS:

A flagship Snapdragon device which goes out of the way to meet our requirements could have largely competitive security. It will be worse in some areas and better in others. Qualcomm’s secure element wouldn’t be as good, but the radios could be more secure rather than worse.

There will be pros and cons for each. Pixels will likely still be more secure than the initial devices from an OEM partner but can surpass them with subsequent generations. Qualcomm is generally very good at security and were just behind on adding MTE to their custom cores.

Cool sounds like I lucked out with the 8 to wait out the transition and hopefully can hold out for future improvements. Shiny thing desire squelched.

Still excited to find out the OEM and hear initial reports here though.

Yeah, similar situation here. I have an 8 Pro, so while I’m pretty excited for GrapheneOS to be collaborating with an OEM and would like to show my support by demonstrating to the OEM that secure devices are a worthwhile niche to invest in, I probably won’t be a buyer of the first-generation device.
