Don’t think so. Content plays in its original scale so it’s always best to have better quality content that you want to play or stream. In 2024, people seldom have low res stuff
This way your TV is broadcasting its presence, and would still not receive any updates for any potential vulnerabilities. I have never owned a smart TV before, but the ones that I have interacted with have had microphones in their remote, I wouldn’t feel comfortable with this setup. I guess getting a monitor and a TV Tuner Card/AppleTV is probably the safest choice here.
If I’m not mistaken most TV models still provides the option to update firmware via USB driver.
Mine doesn’t have but is a 10 years model. Didn’t know that they are making remote controls with microphones. Disturbing times, indeed. I’ll for sure check this when I look for a replacement in the future.
I have a tv from over 10 years ago with a mic in the remote. It’s not a new thing at all.
I bought a TV from SCEPTRE (https://www.sceptre.com/) a few years ago when I was looking for the same thing. They still offer plenty of not-smart TVs. Not sure if they sell in Australia though.
I’m not a privacy expert so I can’t say whether Sceptre TVs collect any data, but a look at their privacy policy seems to indicate the data they are collecting is on their website only.
