Getting a phone for my mom and I am choosing an iPhone 16e. Am I wrong?

Should really be using Signal rather than Facebooks whatsapp service. Will take time but its perfectly doable to install Signal and Facebooks whatsapp service and them both at the same time.

Not to mention far less efficient to actually type on or do meaningful tasks. Unless a phone somehow grows a magical 80% keyboard I can’t see it being a substitute for actual real work. I use it as a notification device and when on the move.

Yes, because unlike Facebook or Whatsapp, it has less leaky holes for example Whatsapp stores by default unencrypted backups of conversations.

Signal is more secure and always been E2EE only. It does not generate it’s revenue from the advertising industry which is purely positioned itself in a way to both spy better on users and push products to them.

And do you think the same is not for you?

You’ve clearly demonstrated your anti-apple bias, to the point of derailing the entire thread by mentioning PixelOS when it wasn’t part of the conversation. Walled garden wasn’t something he was worried about, yet you made it so, and turned the thing into Android Vs iOS debate when it needn’t need be.

Simple matter of fact is; he wants a browsing phone for his mother, and he considered Apple, which, objectively speaking, is perfectly fine choice for his needs.

I remembered they said the reverse but it was an older tweet and i cant find it. So i was admittedly wrong in this instance and didnt keep up with the updated info.

Its how i weigh the available information rather than bias. I don’t inherently dislike anything by default. Please bother to read the entire thread. I didn’t originally mention “stock android” which was used to refer to Pixel os.

Your phrasing with the next sentence being directly about Pixel implied that, but to entertain the alternate interpretations, let me address those too:

  • You think that all Android is the same, and say that out of Android and iOS the worst is Android.

Well, yeah, out of two the second is the worst. I don’t disagree, but I don’t think this would’ve been worth saying.

  • You think something like Xiaomi’s MIUI is more similar to Google’s stock Android (either from privacy perspective or modified code volume) and can be considered the same (and thus together take the “worst” spot), but GrapheneOS is different enough that it can’t be.

I simply disagree with this. I believe that MIUI’s privacy properties are significantly more different than Pixel’s stock. I also believe it contains way more (useless) changes like a theming engine and other crap.

I don’t recall them mentioning anything about it in the opposite direction in the past. With Google and phone manufacturers making it more difficult to use custom ROMs, we will likely see a shift towards something similar to iPhones until we observe meaningful improvements in Linux development for consumer phones. The discussion about Pixels and iPhones comes all the time, iPhones are pretty decent for normies.

So you consider yourself above bias, but accuse someone else for said bias?

You’re right, I apologise for that. But my point still stands; this conversation shouldn’t have been devolved into platform wars, and should’ve stayed to the point. Neither side is going to change their mind, so it’s pointless to discuss anyway.

What I said, and what I meant, is that all stock Android ROMs are the worst operating systems on the market from a privacy perspective which, yes, includes the stock Pixel ROM.

I didn’t say anything about differences within that category. There can be plenty of difference between them, but to me it does not matter if the Pixel stock ROM is so much better than MIUI or whatever, because they are both still not worth considering frankly.

This is the second time you just make something up and lie about what i say.

I didn’t accuse him. I said it was my personal opinion.

I don’t think that low of Jonah. If either of us hear a compelling enough argument, we will. I listed a bunch of verifiable reasons why i think iOS is inferior. (Not including where i fucked up with misquoting GrapheneOS. They are right about stuff most often but I don’t consider what they say gospel.)

Tried that. Everyone in the family kept saying, I ‘ve got some friends groups or office groups on WhatsApp and I don’t want to install another app.

It is so easy to convince random strangers than family, friends or relatives…

Mate, I am sorry that this query has turned into Android vs iOS.

I really did not want that to happen. I like GOS and can use it without any hiccups. But for a person who is not well aware about sandboxing or profiles, a non GOS device would be much better so I thought of iOS for my mom.

To me there are three types of OS: iOS,GOS & All other androids. I only asked about iOS or GOS but not the stock androids of any device including Pixels.

Each of you have valid points but please be cool to each other guys. My question was purely about usage requirement of a senior and not for privacy users like us.

iPhone is ok enough. Graphene on Pixel is better but it has its own issues (notification not working out of the box, no playstore/F-Droid pre-installed, etc.

I think the more important thing to consider is to teach your parents basic cyberhygiene and how to protect your mom from phishing attacks.

How is VPN support better?

I feel you on this. WhatsApp is the absolute plague where I live as well. I have a grand total 7 people using Signal after more than 5 years of trying, and even those people still have my name and number in their contacts app which I assume is allowed complete access by whatever pustulant social Meta/ByteDance/Google owned app installed on their phones anyway.
