eSim activation, Wifi needed, Security risk? (GrapheneOS)

Hi,

I got GrapheneOS on my Pixel phone and wanted to get an eSim on it. I got an account with silent.link and started the process away from my house, but the OS asked for a Wifi connection and I stopped it for now.

Why does the OS needs Wifi at this moment?

Can I use the public Wifi of a shopping center or fast food place for that or would this be to insecure?

Internet is needed to download the esim profile

If you use the phone with the esim in it while you’re at home, it won’t matter where you set it up, they will quickly correlate your home address.

Hi,
yes that make sense. I hoped it can download the info via ethernet and than later on can establish the connection to the esim carrier.
Do you think the public wifi might be a security issue for that?

Hi,
thanks for the info. Not using it at home. Only Ethernet connections.
Do you think the public wifi might be a security issue for that esim installation process?

No, public WiFi won’t be an issue. But to be safe, stick to something like a library or family run coffee shop.

I’m suspicious of corporate WiFi (yes I know all internet is corporate)
