well we agree on splitting it up. But I do think we should inform people of the risks of self hosting that are clearly there. I don’t want to have some noob install Nextcloud on NAS, open their router ports or have a disk crash and losing their data then to come back on the forum complaining about it. I don’t think the warning/disclaimer needs to be excessive necessarily. Some proposal:
“This section of the website focuses on self-hosting your own services to achieve privacy through digital sovereignty. Self-hosting your own solutions requires advanced technical knowledge and a deeper understanding of the associated risks. By self-hosting, we mean hosting applications and data on your own hardware. By becoming the host for yourself and others, you take on responsibilities you might not otherwise have. It is crucial to remain vigilant about topics such as network security, backups, and disaster recovery. For example, you should regularly test your backups to ensure they are functioning correctly.”
Am I not supposed to take this as a commitment to actually doing those sections?
Maybe it is. I meant it in relation to you saying…
because I agree with the sentiment and I find it odd that this happens when there are seemingly commitments to guides about tools not even recommended by PG.
I self-host, mostly for media library purpose, but I turned off most of the online connectivity because I know there are risks. Although, I would love a 101 newbie guide on how to transition properly to see if I missed anything. Not just a disclaimer.
