Co-funded by the EU and supported by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), this project aims to process DNS queries within Europe to ensure compliance with GDPR and other regulations. The service prioritizes privacy and digital sovereignty, explicitly avoiding censorship and restricting access to DNS data from EU institutions.
Why I think this tool should be added
DNS4EU includes real-time regional threat intelligence, enabling threats detected in one EU country to be blocked across the bloc. This is supported by data from CERTs, EU institutions, and telecom providers.
DNSSEC security protocol is enabled across all resolvers. The client’s IP address is fully anonymised before being logged directly onto the resolver and no private data is collected anywhere.
I would feel uncomfortable recommending it, especially as the EU is still discussing Chat Control. Should this pass, they could want to block Signal at the DNS level. And then, I doubt, EU will continue to fund if they skirt their own rules, so DNS4EU will probably comply.
In principle, PG waits products to be mature for some time.
I would be hesitant to recommend it until at least six months. Does it have an advantage over the current alternatives such as Mullvad, quad9 or nextdns?
The program provides robust DNS security for public institutions and their employees, ministries, local governments or municipalities, healthcare, education, and other critical services such as telecommunications providers. By working with the latter, for example, it ensures DNS resolution service for all of a telco’s customers, with minimum manual overhead for their teams.
Additionally, the DNS4EU solutions aid organizations in complying with regulatory requirements (such as GDPR) to keep data within European borders.
The goal of DNS4EU is to ensure the digital sovereignty of the EU by providing a private, safe, and independent European DNS resolver.
AI Center FEE CTU participates as the third largest consortium member under the leadership of Sebastián GarcĂa. "We are honored to be part of such an important effort to protect the privacy and security of EU citizens. Our team will contribute to the experienced consortium with expertise in security and AI to protect users from malware, DNS abuse, phishing, and other threats.
I briefly tested their performance, which is basically on par with other major DNS resolvers, haven’t check their DNS block list yet.
I am not so excited about this one, and I don’t see a good reason to recommend it.
