Following the New Black Mirror Season thread, I think creating a chill thread for everyone to share TV shows, movies, animes and books that somewhat touch on Privacy, Security and freedom (think 1984) is a great idea. This is not intended to be about documentaries or fact-based books, but of course this doesn’t mean there can’t be serious discussion about great stories.
Personally I liked Hated in the Nation episode of Black Mirror. Great showing how social media is amplifying violence but also how pervasive its use is. Then of course, the classical tale of the costs of backdoors. Can’t really say more without spoilers
The only series that come to minds is The Hunger Games I have only read the books 10+ years ago. I never seen the movies. But they are no way close to 1984 in dystopia, if I remember correctly.
You know as an anime fan and seeing how the seasonals have grown as a whole, I want to see more sci-fi Snowden documentary style shows (or I guess like Black Mirror episode but as a theme). Or heck I would love to take on a role as a writer and/or director of such (and yes I will be consulting others from many diverse communities, whenever I’d be PG, Techlore and even GOS and Calyx).
But I understand that’s a pipe dream.
What is the seasonals ?
You can always write a book, it’s free. (If you have time/energy).
But I agree many sci-fi shows do a poor job on being plausible especially around cybersec stuff.
I didn’t think of anime Maybe Serial Experiments Lain
Read the plot on the wikipedia, actually a really good recommendation. Thanks will watch it after Nichijou. But yeah.
when we refer to seasonals, we refer to shows airing this season, so episodes come out one by one every week in a set day (unless delays occur). So for example right, if I was directing and writing Project say “Aftermath of Digital Privacy” or “2025 Post-Snowden” anime show right, and the first episode aired in say, next Sunday after this one, as my role and the animation studio’s role is to release new episodes every Sunday after the fact unless delays occur, and if it’s from a source material like you suggested, a novel or a manga, that usually is fine but especially Original like I would love to, it gets trickier as it means I have until sunday and then every sunday to decide on a plot, characters etc. and subsequently develop the plot every week as a whole. Hopefully with that analogy you get the idea. (if it’s a movie this doesn’t really apply, the movie gets a schedule when it is prime time to premiere and then release usually (with sometimes being just a release))
I agree, with that being said I do prefer animation (movie) as a whole as it gets far more expressive and I can share inspirations to do, license characters from artist if needed and stuff like that. And original animation shows are a thing, one of the notable ones being Lycoris Recoil which started as an original show, no manga, no nothing when it aired.
I am currently watching “Black Clover”, one of many anime series that touches on MKULTRA, also known as SRA (Satanic Ritual Abuse), some really dark stuff.
If you like MKULTRA’ish themes I think Monster is great. But it isn’t sci-fi.
Thank you for recommending Naoki Urasawa’s “Monster”!
I have never seen “Monster”, but the series has been in my search list for years. About ten years ago, I read a good review of it, looked for it, but found that only the first DVD volume of five had been released internationally. At that time, there was an Australian anime company named Siren Visual who had supposedly released the entire series on DVD but in Region 4. I am in the USA, and either Region 1 or Region 0 would have been preferred. I opted to wait hoping that a Blu-ray release would happen…as it usually does about a month after I buy the DVD set. Today, it looks like Siren Visual was bought, and the subsequent company died probably taking with it the chance of a future “Monster” release.
Long story short, yesterday, the Internet Archive was my friend.
Thanks again!
It is not that I like MKULTRA themes, but it often creates rich back stories for damaged characters. My comment was meant that I thought that MKULTRA is surprisingly prevalent in anime.
Have been recently watching Monster and can recommend it.
Maybe Psycho-Pass (I started watching it years ago but never finished it and don’t remember much), but one of its influences is Minority Report.
