Daniel Micay publicly steps down as project leader of GrapheneOS

I thought about not saying anything about this for obvious reasons but I do not believe that I have to “self censor” in order to keep everyone happy.

I’m not surprised by the contents of those DMs in that video having experienced the very same thing first hand. I mean that exactly, right down to every accusation aimed at Louis. Including the accusations of being responsible for the swatting, threats of releasing personal information and using GrapheneOS assets to hurt our organization (website, domain, tweets etc). There were some very wacky suggestions from Micay about what he should do to his “adversaries”, which without a doubt would have violated laws. My only response to that was to caution against such actions and try to direct his attention to focusing on the GrapheneOS project. I haven’t said anything about these things publicly as I figured that it was something he said in the “heat of the moment” and that he didn’t really mean it and it was best if it were forgotten.

We do not condone any of the harassment that Micay has unfortunately received. I had reminded him numerous times that “feeding the trolls” is without a doubt making it a whole lot worse and giving them exactly what they want, a reaction. I am certain that nobody would even know about (or even remember) the original Techlore video if Micay did not regularly mention it.

Micay wanted me to either leave Privacy Guides or somehow fire @Jonah. Removal of any member, is a group decision, and there simply isn’t any grounds for that. Micay genuinely believed that somehow Jonah’s affiliation with Techlore (infrastructure management) meant that he had a say in the content of Henry’s previous videos. I refused to facilitate his ultimatums, wished him the best for his project and really hope that the problems are sorted out in an adult fashion. As a result I’ve been banned from all the GrapheneOS matrix rooms and unbanned about 2-3 times when Micay felt like I was helping him, as I have in many cases defended the project. When I wouldn’t do what he wanted though, I’d find myself banned again, until ultimately I decided not to rejoin those rooms.

I told him that I hope that he gets the support he needs, perhaps more so than what he wants. I am also a fan of the GrapheneOS project as a whole, because the way I see it, there really isn’t anything with a comparable feature set.
