Got a new tablet that has multiple cameras, two on the front, one on the back along with a light sensor that adjusts the tablet bassed on the amount of light even when all types of settings is off.
At this point I’m using a small strip of electrical tape to cover them but wanted to ask if there are better ways? Would glue work better long term? A dark coloured glue? Some thing else?
The minor worry is the tape after a time can randomly slide off, and one spot is covering part of the battery because of camera placement which with intensive use can become quite warm. Glue would take far less area and is not likely to ever slide off.
Please don’t glue your tablet. A folio case goes a long way in that it covers the front camera when you’re not using it and it covers the rear camera when you are using it.
I haven’t as I thought it might mess with the actual screen, but it came to mind as the tape even when cut to size covers a bit too much on that one where the battery is.
Have not heard of a folio case before, will have to look it up. But my concern is when I’m using it and the extra heat from covering the battery there.
I’m typing this as you are editing, and the tablet has two different cameras on the front where the screen is along with the light sensor. Picked this tablet as it had the best specs for the price at a locaiton that had no issue with accepting cash instead of online where a card is needed.
You might also look up your specific tablet and see if someone has made a case with built in camera cover, that way you don’t have to get any adhesive on your device.
Can I extend this thread a tad and ask whether you guys cover the cameras on your phones with anything? Using grapheneos with no junk apps and sensible permissions, would this be overkill?
You’d have to be up against a pretty formidable threat for them to be able to break out of the sandbox and bypass the OS camera permissions to activate the camera without you knowing. I’d say it only makes sense for like a state-level targeted adversary or something along those lines that has access to multi-million dollar exploits.
Don’t use paper based or electrical tape, will leave residue behind.
While I typically recommend like an Otterbox case, you can find no-name brand cases that have a flap for the back camera like this one for example.
Extra note, some of them cover the flashlight too which is annoying.
