CNIL says age verification cameras in tobacconists' shops are illegal (France)

TL;DR :
In France some tobacconists’ shops began to use IA-powered camera to estimate customer’s age.
The CNIL (french data protection agency) stated that this was nor necessary, nor appropriate (“ni nécessaire, ni proportionnée”), and that their usage is not GDPR-compliant. The agency also reminded that with or without such verification’s systems, tobacconists still systematically have to request a proof of majority when selling products forbidden for minors.
