Check your financial institution(s). They may support passkeys as of recently

I can only speak to US financial institutions.

Here’s a non-exhaustive list of finance institutions that now support passkeys:

  • Fidelity
  • Vanguard
  • Wells Fargo
  • Robinhood
  • Chase*
  • Merrill Lynch/Edge*
  • American Express
  • Capital One
  • Truist?
  • Coinbase
  • US Bank

Some special shout outs based off anecdotes I’ve heard from people on non-privacy related forums:

  • Fidelity offers passkeys and password + totp as a fallback. Their app apparently works on Grapheneos even without play services and their mobile website is very functional too! :trophy:
  • Chase apparently only rolled out passkeys for some customers.
  • Vanguard already supported hardware security keys to replace SMS 2FA, but now also supports passkeys as an alternative to passwords.
  • Bank of America and Merrill already supported hardware security keys, but no passkeys. They only included passkeys in their Merrill Edge/Lynch brokerage platform, not for logging into Bank of America. Apparently passkeys are not replacing either passwords nor SMS 2FA. Instead, they’re only using them to optionally replace security questions and it will only be used if you don’t sign in for awhile.
  • Schwab supports TOTP and is also rumored to be introducing passkeys very soon. Though they might only be introducing it for crypto customers.
  • Robinhood says they support passkeys, but some report issues on Firefox browsers. Robinhood had TOTP, but removed it last year.
  • E-trade/Morgan Stanley supports TOTP, but no passkeys yet.
  • Coinbase supports passkeys and TOTP as a fallback.
