I’ve recently come across some cell carrier companies that say they protect people’s identity. Two such companies are https://voidmob.com/ & https://www.cape.co/
First, are these companies really protecting privacy of their customers?
Second, are there other companies that offer such services especially those that truly protect their customers’ privacy?
I can’t use them because I’m not in the US and they don’t have their own carrier infrastructure, but their MVNO architecture looks to be designed specifically to protect the identity and device la of their users from being easily correlated by Telco providers.
Sorry I don’t even know exactly what I’m talking about myself. I just have heard many times that these carriers are much better at protecting our privacy. But I’m not sure what this mean. Someone should define this for us. In other words, I’m not sure how these carriers differ from other carriers like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile etc in terms of protecting their users’ data.
It would seem to me that if you never gave the service any data about yourself that would be one form of privacy gained. That would be one form of “protecting their users’ data”. You can do this with silent link or phreeli. They both work internationally.
A second would be the actual data that is being sent over the wire such as text messages, calls, etc. Cape reportedly shuffles the IMSI regularly so that long term collection and correlation would be more difficult. For “pure” privacy, you would have to believe that the carriers themselves are not collecting and keeping your data, which I’m not sure I personally would be willing to do. From my perspective you might as well imagine that normal phone calls and SMS are wide open to the right people. You can take matters into your own hands with regards to these potential issues by using a secure messenger app such as Signal. If you are worried about other apps leaking your data or allowing a profile of your person/activities to be built, you use an always on VPN to minimize the amount of data the carrier is able to see.
