Can a SIM card ejected out of your phone be tracked? (does it send or receive signals?) If a SIM card is ejected, then a phone can still be tracked, but only through wi-fi or bluetooth? If I carry my ejected SIM near a completely new phone, do they “talk” to each other?
As I understand it, the SIM card itself does not connect to anything wirelessly, it just holds information to tell the tower who to bill the data to.
Your phone connects to a tower and can be tracked even without a sim card if not in airplane mode.
No.
I used to work for a cell phone company and this question was common.
People think of bank card skimming, but a cell sim functions very different to a bank card, which throws its card details at a near-distance, similar to RFID.
A sim card needs power on the chip to function, and it’s very difficult to clone or get data from it without direct contact to the integrated circuit.
The most common methods of getting access to a SIM card are calling the provider for a sim replacement, with the owner’s info. Or porting the number to another carrier, also with the owner’s info.
Also, most carriers offer a PIN lock for their SIMs which you can set up. That way, if it’s physically stolen then they need your code to use it in a phone.
Hehe, good luck. In many jurisdictions, unless you are rightful owner, you get rejected (and/or reported to authorities).
Yet not impossible.
