The California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA), which enforces California’s state rules on data protection and privacy rights, known as CCPA, said Thursday that it is seeking a fine of $46,000 against National Public Data for failing to register as a data broker in the state.
National Public Data made headlines after a data breach in April 2024 that saw hackers steal the company’s databases containing Social Security numbers and other personal information, amounting to around three billion records affecting around 270 million individuals (though much of the data appeared inaccurate). The theft was one of the largest data breaches of 2024 by the number of records stolen.
Only $46,000 after leaking millions of SSNs? There needs to be more servere legal consquences against these data brokers.
