Block Party browser extension - thoughts?

Hey folks!

I just heard about this app.

I’m curious about it and wouldn’t mind paying $50/year for it. But I am, of course, skeptical about giving my information

Two lines are particularly vague from their privacy policy:

  • We collect product usage data and anonymized social media account metadata from all users of the product, regardless of whether or not they have registered, for the purposes of debugging issues and building our product.
  • We also collect Social Media Settings and Social Media Account Information in an identifiable manner for registered users only and anonymously for unregistered users.

I email their team asking about these — and I told them that they would earn a lot more trust from users like me if they spelled out exactly what information and metadata they collect and justified why its necessary to deliver their service.

It seems to me someone could make this app and collect no information, and that if you really values privacy, that would be the best move for all.

Curious if anyone has tried this app, or if you know of similar options.

I started installing the app, and they are a little more clear during setup:

Nice.

I am acquainted with Tracy Chou, the founder, through a 4mo mentorship program by Mozilla.

From what I saw of her, she’s acutely serious about security, abuse, toxicity, & privacy. In fact, she left a very lucrative domain (“AI”) to build Block Party.

If there’s any specific concerns, I offer to send her an email on your behalf, but of course, you can contact their team directly (they’re likely pretty small & nimble) and she might end up reading your concerns herself (even if there’s no reply).

Thanks for bringing this tool up, I did not know about it and find it amazing. Won’t using though since I’ve never had a real/big/substantial online presence and don’t have an account with any of these  :
