Curious if the ability to pause membership is available, where the original amount from this point in time would be preserved and could be resumed later on.
Good question ![]()
At the moment we don’t have a pause option, so you would resubscribe at whatever the currently offered price is. The price now is more for people who want to support us on a regular basis from the outset.
Another membership perk idea:
I don’t know what you guys have thought about for speaking engagement (virtual ones more than likely), but a member perk could be that members would get priority and consideration for having you as a speaker at an event.
For example, let’s say there is a group of activists in a city and one of those folks is a member of Privacy Guides. They could reach out to ask if someone from Privacy Guides is available to do like a presentation or Q&A on security and privacy for the context you would be presenting in. Basically it could be a priority pass to have someone present information directly.
There are probably different ways to take that idea, whether it’s in the implementation or how available something like that is, but I think that could be valuable for some folks.
I have organizing in the brain lol
While what you’re asking is a good idea on paper, I don’t think PG has the capacity/bandwidth to make it happen and would definitely be beyond the scope of what a mere $100 membership gives you or should give anyone. That’s asking a bit much, no?
Perhaps at even higher donation levels this could be a once or twice a year perk where you also get to proudly appear as a major sponsor of PG (and of course, online).

But of course, I could be wrong and this may in fact be feasible. I’ll be damned if so.
I think I’d have to get better at speaking live first, there’s a reason this is a written website ![]()
I haven’t read the replies to this post, so maybe someone already brought it up. But perhaps membership benefits could also include discounts for merchandise, behind-the-scenes content, etc.
Some publications give subscribers the ability to gift access. For example, the NYT, The Economist, or The Atlantic let subscribers create a link to share access to walled content. Would you folks consider a gifting feature, as a way to spread the word?
Based on the above suggestion, scaling it down, would there be any desire from PG team or from the supporters to have virtual events/talks or just virtual catchups on (semi-) regular basis? I understand that in this community privacy is important and it would be unfair to expect from the team something that goes against the whole ethos, but this may work? I think Techlore membership does something similar.
In any case, any ideas about a virtual form of catch-ups, presentations, discussions, Q&As or anything like that?
A second suggestion would be to create a dedicated Signal/Session/SimpleX group for supporters? Again, Techlore and Firewalls Dont Stop Dragons podcast (I’m sure there are others) do something similar. I know Members have a dedicated forum page, but a chat platform for more live/ephemeral discussion can also exist side by side.
If you sign up for our email newsletter and get the full post you could always forward it to a friend ![]()
I’ll look into this more though!
We do weekly Q&As already. Definitely considering a members chat option!
like what I proposed?
but there you did promise not to make a members chat of kind for what you stated so im not sure what the implication is there.
Yeah exactly like that. Well things change in half a year lol
I’m going to be donating via Monero today. How much should I donate to take advantage of the 40% discount? It looks like I can choose how much?
Thank you for your support!
Sadly, I don’t have a way to offer membership to people to make one-time donations. I also don’t have a way to offer a discount to people who make cryptocurrency donations at https://donate.magicgrants.org/privacyguides/membership yet.
I am working on both of these things!
In the meantime, if you (or anyone else) want to donate with cryptocurrency to become a member for a year or longer (≥0.186 XMR) please DM me and I can look into doing it manually.
Am i understanding this correctly, that buying a year sub gets a 40% discount and an additional 17% discount?
Yes. The 40% discount makes it $6 per month or $60 (equivalent of ten months) per year, which is where the additional 17% discount comes in.
Maybe I just misunderstood the banner. Can you clarify what “40% off a membership forever!” means? Sorry, I just want to understand before I donate.
It means the price currently is at 40% off at $60 USD that if you begin paying annually, it will remain the same price forever for you even though it may go up to the standard $100 for others after this discount period ends.
It’s a very good deal and worth donating to if you ask me.
I suggest making partnerships with privacy service providers , so a membership with you can get us discounts with them , win win for everyone , kind of like what Ente started doing with : Ente - Friends
You don’t want an entity like Privacy Guides to associate themselves in any way personally with any privacy apps or tools they recommend officially or unofficially at risk of being accused of being biased or unfair with their assessments. What you’re suggesting is a terrible idea and is absolutely not a win-win for everyone. I don’t think you’ve thought this idea through.
PG must remain unbiased and objective.
The recommendations can (and should) still be unbiased and without referral links , but i don’t see why memberships can’t use partnerships and get us discounts
