Backdoors in VStarcam cameras

Another day, another substandard IoT product.

Good thing Matter supports security cameras now, you don’t need any online connection anymore.

I do understand (somewhat) Matter but not familiar with it (no practice) to the point of knowing if a random XYZ camera can connect to HA via Matter if the original company/developers haven’t actively planned for such.

Is it a magic bullet here that would allow any kind of Xiami/whatever to be linked via Matter? (sounds too good to be true) :exploding_head:

It’s something that older cameras could be updated to support but since companies hate updating old devices I think it’s more likely you’ll be buying new cameras instead.

Hahahaha, yeah most companies won’t (unfortunately) care enough implementing Matter support, especially when selling them for <20$. :sob:

This is not how Matter works, and Matter is extremely misleading. It has very poor security properties and leaves most smart homes worse off, because the requirement to use an internet-isolated VLAN for proper security remains, but Matter makes it significantly more difficult to do that.

The only Matter products I will buy and use are Matter-over-Thread products, because Thread inherently creates an internet isolated network, but this isn’t applicable to cameras. Matter-over-WiFi devices like cameras (but also many other shittier Matter IoT devices) have no place in a secure network IMO.

Apple HomeKit routers allow you to deny internet access for smart home accessories and keep them all on a separate VLAN for security, might be something that would be cool to see in Matter one day

Did not know this. Thank you for sharing!

That would be ideal, if it was an open standard that got implemented on serious routers/firewalls somehow. I don’t even know how to buy a router that supports HomeKit, but I’m sure whatever routers are out there are relatively shitty.

I wonder if you have a HomeKit router and you use an iOS device to add a Matter device to HomeKit, if Matter devices would automatically work with this feature already? That could be interesting if so, but still a proprietary solution.

My parents’ eero router supports it and that’s quite a popular one. You don’t get much feedback in the app so I’m not sure if the accessories need to explicitly support HomeKit or not, you basically just get those three options it lists in the support article.

For some reason Apple doesn’t list it as a supported router but I think they just don’t update that page very often.

I guess I’ll stick to PoE.
