tl;dr Modern phones only enter a low power mode when you “power them down”. They’re only powered off when you take out the battery.

I pointed this out to Jonah who authored “Protestor’s guide to smart phone security” (ref) but contrary to what you’d expect, some here don’t think this is a serious enough concern … I mean, at protests, the adversarial forces at play are literally the law enforcement and the govt!
