Found this today here: Apple Platform Security (Jan 2026) [pdf] | Hacker News

Very nice to see Apple continue developing and maintaining great security for their devices.

I never saw any news about this (unlike with the A19 on the iPhone 17), but the M5 chip also supports memory tagging

Why doesn’t the M5 support Page Protection Layer?

1: Secure Page Table Monitor (SPTM) is supported in the A15 or later and M2 or later SOCs and replaces Page Protection Layer on supported platforms

There is no news, because it is still not available for use on macOS nor iPadOS.

This setting is available on iOS 26 and later on iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, or iPhone Air.

From what I have seen it appears likely that developers can enable MIE for their apps on macOS today, but this is undocumented, and I have not yet seen any indication it is being used on the macOS kernel or other system components like it is on iOS.

I’m glad the M5 supports MTE. I’ll be shocked if macOS and iPadOS don’t officially support it at some point in the future.
