I checked accounts of Proton, Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Drive, and Lumo — they’re all the same.
I thought Proton was totally unrelated to the United States to avoid gag orders and other privacy-violating laws.

Also, depending on how this feature of X works, they may be simply using IP addresses through which the account is accessed to name the country. And it’s Proton, they may be using a VPN for all their activities anyway so you never know.
Many people, myself included, are wondering why Proton and other “cool projects” are still on X. I can no longer read X posts because it immediately asks for a username and password.
We need to get rid of this platform. Sorry, but that’s how it is.
Well they have also Mastodon and Bluesky accounts.
I think they still hang on X because of the network effect where the vast majority of people that need to be privacy educated are.
The other thing also the people managing social media likely are different from the people that have access to infrastructure, that’s almost certain so it doesn’t really matter. They also may be contractors.
That is almost certainly the reason. Typically one employs marketing where like there is an audience to convert into sales. That is the logical thing.
They need to spread their msg and they have to use all platforms to get to a broader audience.
Hi, just wanted to clarify that our accounts are not ‘based’ in the United States. They were created in Switzerland, and are managed by our team spread around European countries i.e. UK. We aren’t sure why X is showing this information across all of our profiles.
Because that’s where most people still are and you need to be on there for marketing and other purposes. I’m sure even Proton wishes they did not need to be on there but as a business, you have to.
We need to get rid of all social media that’s has the business models they currently do.
Man, reading X is so confusing and it took me 3min to be sure that we’re talking about damn Twitter.
Please guys, stick to Twitter rather.
Also, who cares about the BS renaming?
Same goes for Facebook IMHO.
Topic related: I guess it’s indeed not a big deal mostly visibility + socials team can be working from remote. ![]()
Only discourse knows where the real @Proton_Team account originates. ![]()
It would be great if Proton’s Xitter account used Proton VPN to appear to come from the USA to appease the corporate masters of Xitter.
Twitter does hate VPNs, and I’ve had to start a couple throwaway accounts with none simply because no VPN location would work (IIRC, that was with Nord). That being said, I can’t tell what location it said for that account.
Also, Proton has plenty of past and current job posts, including PR manager, North America, that are listed publicly so it’s easy to see where their list of offices are. There’s not a lot of mystery here if you spend 2 minutes looking. Career opportunities | Proton
Even Twitter acknowledged that their location data wasn’t accurate, so I don’t understand why suddenly everyone is so quick to trust Elon and Grok now, while simultaneously saying everyone should leave the platform because it’s a mess and untrustworthy.
