Thanks to some help from @Encounter5729 on this forum I was able to download and take some screenshots of the EU age verification app, still in testing phase:
this app has been long around on github, i had it like 5 months ago⌠nothing interresting to see here tbh.
Ok, didnât know that. Itâs big news for EU this week, and a lot of people donât know about Github or downloading the apk.
I want to point out, referring to past discussions about management of PG forums, that you are the admin/team member who tends to start a negative downward spiral in tone.
As an admin, I would try to be neutral first and let regular forum users do the criticising, or, rephrase something like that maybe as a question instead of an outright dismissal.
I worked hard on that article and to me, it was very interesting to see the app in practice, because the announcement was made two days ago. I always think that if it is interesting to me, then it will be interesting to at least some others too.
Not to mention there has been updates made to the app.
Also, did the passport option work for you ? I had a weird bug when scanning for ID, the selector was too small and it never actually went to the next step.
I donât wonât back in addressing what in my opinion is lower quality research / easy scoring (sorry) and surely wonât let me be censored in some way by a blogger. You see me as direct, that is part of my culture, I value honesty, not some vague way of saying what you think. I just personally donât find this post interesting, itâs fine if others do.
You can see the difference between our posts as individual and as PG by the official notice tag and different background color of the comment (which is not the case here). Might also be good to remind you that I am not paid by PG and I am user like yourself. What you see here is my personal opinion.
If you opened the link you quoted even you can easily click through and see that the first version of this APK was available long time ago.
The app has been previously mentioned on the forum as well to which you replied before EU age verification app to ban any Android system not licensed by Google . You might have forgotten about it.
I didnât want to test that out with my actual passport.
I wasnât aware of this. Maybe that could be made more obvious?
About your comment: my blog is aimed at non-tech users interested in privacy issues. You might be underestimating just how many people like that donât even know what Github is. If I think about my own friend and family circle, that number would be zero.
On the other hand, the app is going to affect all EU citizens in quite an impactful way. I felt that taking the screenshots was something newsworthy, because most people will not have seen what the app experience looks like.
Like your admin work here on PG, my blog is a labour of love. I donât earn from it.
I wonder how this will be implemented in countries that already has digital IDâs like Denmarks MitID.
Btw you donât have to post if you donât find something âinterestingâ. You can just skip the topic.
I think this will be something additional to the existing ID apps. It seems to me that one of the ways to verify your age on the new EU app is with one of those existing ID apps.
Whatâs a little confusing to me is that Von der Leyen refers to âthe appâ, but in other news stories I get the sense that each EU country is expected to create and implement their own version of this app. I also wonder if these country-specific apps will be bound by the same open source development as the core EU app currently is.
I wonder how this will be implemented in countries that already has digital IDâs like Denmarks MitID.
Many of this ID apps already have an API connection to the EUID and are cross compatible with each other.š
1: This depends on what âIDâ means. If it is in the meaning of an IDP or a digitalization of an ID or a complete system suite.
