I need to use their slopmail service for enterprise reasons, and so I had it set up so that Outlook would automatically forward emails to my personal ProtonMail account. This way, I would get notifications, without having the app installed.

Worked for a few months and then all of a sudden stopped. I found out not only had it stopped forwarding the emails, but it had also been doxxing my personal email to the sender.

The sender got an automated reply saying something like “We can’t send this email to [not-wittingly@protonmail.com](mailto:not-wittingly@protonmail.com) blah blah blah”. Very disappointing, very annoying. Perhaps this is how the email protocol simply works and this would be the case with any service? Not sure. Outrageous either way. Needless to say, I have now set it up so that it forwards to an alias instead, so it can’t dox me again in the future.

I guess it’s not the email protocol as such, but rather MS Exchange feature:

I wonder were your emails forwarded or redirected? They behave differently.

It’s also likely the organization started blocking forwarding, it could explain why it worked before. So I’m not sure an alias will help.

I changed the email and now it’s working fine. I think it just stopped temporarily working. The reason I changed to an alias wasn’t to fix it, just so that if it doesn’t go through again it doesn’t announce my personal email to the world.

Stack layers of defense wherever reasonable.
