The owner of this company posted their site here a few hours ago. Was deleted for self-ad, but I found some features interesting.

Some background info on them:

Company referred in the [privacy policy](https://archive.md/bDtkD) is “AUVEZA Marketing B.V.”. Company less than a year old, with 51k EUR assets, and one employee:

[AUVEZA Marketing - NL 866637667B01 | Overzicht | Bizzy](https://bizzy.org/nl/nl/94105022/auveza-marketing-bv)

If any of you wants to spend 3 EUR, you can also buy the trade register extract: [Producten bestellen | KVK](https://www.kvk.nl/bestellen/#/94105022000059603887?origin=search)

App is around since last September according to version log by Apple.

It seems the founder is “Alessandro De Vries” as per this LinkedIn post: [Post by Unicorn Events](https://archive.md/AkvvY).

According the [other post](https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/bootstrapping-my-privacy-start-up-and-looking-for-support-feedback/27536) by @whynotprivacy they are “a small bootstrapped team (no investors, no outside interests)” so I guess that event didn’t go well. Not surprising considering the privacy community would probably catch enshittification attempts better than others, so is not really a good fit for VCs. Still, it tells you about how the no-VC thing they advertise is not for the lack of trying.

I also found some history:

They used to be called “SurfSkip”, a web proxy service seemingly for bypassing blocks in K12 institutions, then turned into a generic VPN service.

Here’s some stuff:

[Discord invite with url “SurfSkip” that now points to “WhyNotPrivacy”](https://archive.md/qZogd)
[Some random repo about reporting their proxies to some blocklist](https://github.com/uhidontkno/surfskipfucker-2.0/blob/ade8be94cb2d39c0756586b40f61418f0d326eb8/fucker.ts#L143)

SurfSkip also had some GitHub presence, which is mostly wiped now.

[GitHub SurfSkipTech org](https://archive.md/tOEdW)
[GitHub @SurfSkip aka “alessandro.thegreat” on instagram](https://archive.md/7jiQF)

Their only remaining repo has commits only from “DaviDecoder”:

[DaviDecoder commit](https://archive.md/Fd2Rw)
[DeviDecoder issue](https://web.archive.org/web/20250513091423/https://github.com/ccnnde/react-native-simple-openvpn/issues/72) where he identifies whynotprivacy as “my company”, and discord “a.thegreat” as contact method, also complains about “kill switch not really working”.

DaviDecoder also contributes to a GH org named “ThePrivateCompany”, with releases binaries bearing the “whynotprivacy” name: [https://archive.md/IJ3nf](https://archive.md/IJ3nf)

So far imo this looks like a one man show, with the bog standard copy-paste VPN feature set, wouldn’t count on it staying around by next year. However, I find the phone number stuff interesting. I don’t know of any long-term phone number masking service available in EU, so it’d be great to hear some reviews, and/or figure out what they’re reselling and how it works in the regulatory environments since some of those countries on their site require KYC for any phone number.

A quick scan of there website reveals it is full of trackers [https://radar.cloudflare.com/scan/0cd44d23-552b-4539-9bfe-cdc8426615fe/summary](https://radar.cloudflare.com/scan/0cd44d23-552b-4539-9bfe-cdc8426615fe/summary)

It is definitely not a privacy friendly company with the right motivators from what it looks. We keep them of the forum as they are really just there for advertising it seems.

Some of the pages have quite amusing content with, what feels like, AI-generated texts.

Well this is where I would be like: Red flag, immediately get out, ring the alarm while you’re at it.

If you don’t have a working product, don’t post a site with false information. If you felt ready to post your site on this forum but now defend it’s clearly AI generated (or completely horribly written pages) by saying “it’s not ready”, it’s showing clear issues with your company and your product vision.

This is just a disingenuous reply.

> On the legal/KYC stuff: yeah, we’re trying hard to keep it privacy first and avoid KYC wherever legally possible. But you’re right, that’s gonna be a big regulatory challenge, especially in the EU. Not pretending we have all the answers yet, but we’re doing our best to figure it out while keeping users’ privacy front and center.

The real problem with the phone number KYC stuff is not on the customer (our) side, but the provider you resell. I suspect it’s a grey market service like [onlinesim.ru](http://onlinesim.ru) which I’ve used before. However such numbers are temporary and may go away any time without warning, so absolutely unsuitable for masking for 2FA. This is why I’m curious about its legal background, because it actually affects the reliability of the service.

To all here @DaviDecoder user is circumventing an account suspension or impersonationing. We don’t know as they are not using an associated address. We do not allow this on the forum. Please flag posts of people who are not verified and say to speak on behalf of an organization or project.
