# Why Your IP Address Isn't the Only Thing Websites Can Use to Identify You

I’ve been reading more about browser fingerprinting recently, and one thing that changed how I think about online tracking is that your IP address is only one part of the picture.

I used to assume that using a VPN or proxy was enough to make my browser environment look different.

It obviously changes the network address, but websites can observe many other signals.

For example, a browser may expose information such as:

- User-Agent

- Screen resolution

- Timezone

- Language

- Hardware characteristics

- Canvas rendering

- WebGL information

- WebRTC-related network information

None of these necessarily identifies you by itself.

The interesting part is **correlation**.

Imagine a website sees an IP associated with Germany, but the browser reports a UTC+8 timezone, Chinese language preferences, an unusual screen configuration, and a particular WebGL renderer.

Each signal might be relatively weak, but together they can create a browser profile that is much easier to distinguish.

### Canvas and WebGL are especially interesting

Canvas fingerprinting uses subtle differences in how a browser renders graphics and text.

WebGL can provide information related to the graphics environment.

What I find interesting is that simply changing the User-Agent doesn’t necessarily make the rest of the browser environment consistent.

You could theoretically report one operating system through the User-Agent while exposing characteristics that don’t match it through other APIs.

That seems to be where fingerprinting becomes more interesting than simply identifying an IP address.

### But fingerprint protection isn’t the same as anonymity

This is probably the part I find most confusing when reading discussions about fingerprinting.

Making a browser fingerprint less unique doesn’t automatically make someone anonymous.

There is also an interesting trade-off: if you modify too many characteristics and create an unusual combination, you might actually become **more** identifiable.

So I’m wondering how much fingerprint modification is actually useful in practice.
