it’s working on a second profile with play services , and I’m not the only one : WhatsApp not working anymore - GrapheneOS Discussion Forum , curious if anyone outside of Graphene is having same issue and if there is any solution (that doesn’t require Play services)
Mine is working fine in the owner profile and no play services.
are you on latest update of both Whatsapp and Grapheneos ? ,
the app launches fine but most incoming messages show : “Waiting for this message This may take a while”
Yes, lastest version of Whatsapp and GrapheneOS.

I had that too like a week ago.
I think it was caused by an update from Aurora store installing a beta version and then a stable one, breaking things.
This is was due by using Aurora store with anonymous account since you can get random accounts that have beta software enabled. So it’s better to have your own throwaway account just for Aurora store.
If your Whasapp is not working I suggest to do a backup of your chats, uninstall the app, reinstall and restore the backup.
Also to avoid crash during use, I found it necessary to disable the hardened memory allocator.
To be honest, I only have WhatsApp installed because my work uses it, although very rarely. I noticed that it wasn’t working yesterday, I couldn’t send any messages, even after installing newest app and OS updates.
I’m happy to just uninstall it, I finally have a reason!
Happend to me too and I needed to reinstall WhatsApp. Which was a pain since WhatsApp allows you to use iCloud or Google Drive for BackUPs (which I didn’t have). There are local backups and WhatsApp also regally backups data to this local backups, but when I tried to set up WhatsApp after removing it, it never gave me the option to use the local backups for restoring data.
You have to manually copy the backup from/to the phone unfortunately.
I did it and it did not work.
I found a solution , without installing Play services , if you have Whatsapp or WA business , don’t uninstall , just install the other version and log in to your account then log back in using the first app , should work and keep your data intact
For me it the local backup worked when I put the airplane mode on when it asked about restoring from backup. Then it failed it connect to Google Drive and only then it offered to check for a local backup. Once that’s done you can turn the airplane mode off again.
Same.
@overuse, @Cyber-Typhoon It happened to me again.
Reinstalling WhatsApp does not fix the issue it will appear again after some time.
For now, I set up a new user profile, installed Google Play Store and Google Play Service and WhatsApp through the Play Store.
This seems to “fix” it.
I have no issues with Whatsapp with their direct download. No Google Play Services installed.
Had a recent issue with WhatsApp automatically logging me out. Entered my number again, but the app didn’t function properly. A lot of messages I received had a “waiting…” error message, I couldn’t send any messages or link my devices.
I did uninstall and reinstall by downloading the apk from the website. Now it’s working normally. I don’t have any of my previous messages, but for me, that’s fine.
